At the end of each Splatfest, participants will earn Super Sea Snails based on their individual and team contribution. If you give snails to Murch in Inkopolis Square, he can add additional slots to your gear, or scrub your gear to remove its secondary abilities.

Please note that Super Sea Snails will not be distributed for the Splatfest World Premiere event taking place this weekend. Save data from the demo will not carry over into the full game.

We all know Inklings love to grab a bite at Crusty Sean's new food-truck venture, the aptly named Crust Bucket. Chow down on these deep-fried snacks and you'll get more cash and experience from battles. However, it seems the only currency that Sean accepts is "tickets" which can be earned in Octo Canyon or Salmon Run.

Ink Armor grants each member of your team armor that nullifies damage from a single attack. It works on all team members regardless of proximity. The effect lasts for a limited time, but we imagine this special will be useful for laying pressure on opponents.

The Bomb Launcher special allows you to launch bombs without consuming any ink. The longer a player holds the R button, the farther the bomb will travel. They also come in different varieties: Splat-Bomb Launcher, Curling-Bomb Launcher, Autobomb Launcher, etc. We also discovered that this special doesn't necessarily tie to your kit's sub weapon, meaning you might discover a kit with Suction Bomb sub and Curling-Bomb Launcher special, for example.

It appears that there are now two ways to enter Splatfest Battles: Solo & Team. Solo mode works like Splatfest in the original Splatoon game; you'll automatically match with three other players and battle against groups of four random players from the opposing team.

Team mode requires four players (must be friends with someone from the same team who is in the Lobby) to join a private lobby before being matched up against another team of four.

The final result will be determined by popularity, Solo Win percentage, and Team Win percentage.

The Dapple Dualies are dualie-type weapons that have been engineered for optimum mobility. They're lighter than standard Splat Dualies, allowing for faster movement, but they have less range. It's a trade-off. Utilize the increased mobility to set Squid Beakons around the map, and call your teammates to the front lines! And use the Suction-Bomb Launcher to further expand your team's territory. Sheldon recommends this set for players who want to swiftly splat their opponents and support their team.

Baller! Yes, this is a new special weapon called the Baller! Roll around the stage in an oversized hamster ball that protects you from a certain amount of damage. If you hold down ZR, the ball will fill with ink, eventually causing an explosion on the spot.

Now this right here is Flow. You'll find her working at Headspace, Inkopolis's spot for hats and helmets. From the way she talks, she might seem a bit loopy, but that's just part of her mysterious vibe. Word has it she's a bit older than most of her Inkling customers, and teasing them is one of her favorite pastimes. The little guy who lives among her tendrils is her erstwhile companion, Craymond, an unhinged emperor shrimp who's always got her back.

Hey, I’m Eric Smith here with Morgan Ritchie from the Nintendo Treehouse. As the writers of the English text in the Splatoon series, Splatoon 2 is very near and dear to our hearts. We really wanted the first Splatfest of Splatoon 2 to be the best Splatfest ever, so we set about coming up with a theme that would capture the hearts and minds of Nintendo Switch owners everywhere. That didn’t really work out, so we did what we always do when we’re out of ideas—we slapped the haunted fax machine next to Reggie’s office until it spat out a piece of paper. The paper had a cupcake and an ice-cream cone on it, so we were like, “That’s a cool theme, I guess.” And here we are.

Morgan and I naturally disagreed about which of the two desserts is superior, so we’ve come to the Treehouse Log to argue our points, mostly because the rest of the office is sick of us yelling over our desks at each other. The following is an actual IM conversation that occurred on 7/10/2017.

OK, Morg. Tell me how a stand-up guy like yourself ended up voting for Team Cake? In other words, where did your life go wrong?

Morg

I love cake! It’s art. It’s craft. There’s a reason it’s served at so many special occasions. It means something. It’s anything and everything you want it to be. It can be light, fluffy, fruity, dense, bold, delicate, creamy, chocolatey, carroty, colorful, magical, transcendent! And it can’t. Melt.

But please, I’d love to hear why you went Team Ice Cream.

First of all, the only reason cake is served at special occasions instead of ice cream is because, as you said, it can’t melt. Cake is valued more for its convenience than its flavor. We as a society settle for cake at weddings the way one might settle for a cheap, rented tuxedo with questionable frosting stains on the cummerbund. Humans are lazy—we don’t want to put in the time or money to keep our dessert cold for the two hours it takes the bride and groom to recite vows that they definitely plagiarized from the Internet. Given unlimited resources, though, I think most people would prefer a wedding sundae over a slice of wedding cake, and I think the popularity vote in the upcoming Splatfest will reflect that. Have you ever been to a billionaire or superhero’s wedding? They totally serve ice cream instead of cake because they have the means to do so.

OK, wow. You seem pretty heated for someone who prefers frozen cream. Your insecurity is showing. Secondly, you think most people would prefer a “wedding sundae"… So wait, now ice cream on its own isn’t good enough? It needs to be covered in chocolate sauce, nuts, and whipped cream?! Is that still ice cream? Are you Team Ice Cream or Team Sundae?! This is the problem with you ice-cream coneheads. It’s never good enough for you on its own. You gotta put stuff on top of it, put it between two cookies, serve it on top of pie or with cake, or even MAKE A CAKE OUT OF IT! I mean seriously, ice-cream cake? Can’t you just enjoy your frozen cream on its own? You had to make a cake out of it? I mean, that’s fine because it gives me a loophole to enjoy some, but c'mon. Ice cream is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Cake reigns supreme.

(Way to keep the wedding theme going. Good stuff.) But let’s get one thing straight—ice-cream cake is more ice cream than cake. And the irony of a filthy cake gobbler complaining about additional ingredients is richer than a mouthful of delicious gelato. The reason cake is slathered in frosting is because the cake itself is nearly unpalatable without a thick coating of sugar sauce to help choke it down. Cake is more flash than substance—chefs mold fondant into shapes and statues in order to make an otherwise dull dessert look appetizing. Red Velvet is basically just chocolate cake mixed with enough red food coloring to make anyone foolish enough to eat it cry tears of blood. And don’t even get me started on rice cakes. Ice cream on the other hand needs no such crutch. Its purity and versatility are its greatest strengths.

Yes, ice cream can do it all—it’s incredible on its own, but you can also toss it in a cone, throw it in a sandwich, drop it in a glass of root beer, wrap it around a stick, or even freeze dry it and eat it in outer space. Feel like using a straw to get your ice-cream fix? Boom. Milkshake. Skipped breakfast and low on potassium? BLAM. Banana split. Need some probiotics? WHAM. Frozen yogurt. Ice cream can do anything, including stomp cake into the ground.

You lost me at frozen yogurt. I get that ice cream goes well with just about anything. It’s like the ketchup of desserts. But cake stands alone, above, beyond. Picture a perfectly cut piece of your favorite cake. Picture it on a plate, the light catching it just so, refracting the moist, fluffy layers of baked goodness and rich layers of creamy, buttery frosting. Picture your fork carving off that first, perfectly proportioned bite. Picture that bite slowly floating toward your mouth, the awe, the anticipation, the glory of such a beautifully crafted piece of edible, delicious art. Cake arouses the senses. It inspires the imagination. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Cake is poetry. Cake is a time machine. Cake is perfection with room to write your name on it. Baking a good cake requires skill, precision, patience, and constant vigilance. The same qualities it takes to excel at Splatoon 2, in fact. On July 15th, a very special occasion indeed, ice cream will finally get served.

Instead of using cold, hard facts to argue your point, you have to sugarcoat the experience with flowery language, hiding the truth behind a deceitful wall of frosting. Anyone can use a few sexy words to make something sound appetizing. I could make a diaper pail sound like a buffet of indulgence if I wanted to. Each decadent diaper holding a new and exciting surprise with which to delight and seduce the senses. But that would be at odds with the no-nonsense elegance under which ice cream operates. Ice cream makes no excuses. It’s cold, it’s in your face, and it’s not afraid to tell you when you’ve had too much. (That brain freeze is no joke.)

I’ve had enough of you, that’s for sure. And to be honest, you should enjoy your ice cream while you can. Climate change favors cake. I think the one thing we can agree on is that we’re excited about this Splatfest! How about this: let’s end this thing with a few words of encouragement for our teammates.

Team Cream—hear my plea. We owe it to our children and our children’s children to cultivate a world in which truth is not cast by the wayside in favor of convenience. This Jellyfish gentleman goes by the name Jelfonzo, and he runs Ye Olde Cloth Shoppe. And check out his origin story: one day he just split off of Jelonzo in Inkopolis Plaza, and there he was! I think that makes him Jelonzo's son? He apparently learned to speak Inkling from an ancient text of some sort, so his speech sounds a bit outdated (to say the least). But don't let that fool you. When it comes to fashion, this dapper dude is always up on the hottest trends.

New weapons are in development. Say hello to the Brella! Much like an Umbrella, it offers both beauty and functionality. Press and hold the ZR button to open it up and block enemy attacks. If you continue to hold down the button...you can even launch it forward! Of course, once launched, you won't be able to open it for a while, so use it wisely.

It appears this weapon type will be ready for Turf War battles in an update after the game launches.

Salmon Run is a mysterious part-time job that Grizzco Industries offers when hordes of Salmonids approach Inkling waters. We've received word that for the first three days after the launch of Splatoon 2 on Friday, July 21st, a MASSIVE number of Salmonids will be migrating toward Inkopolis. This means that the frequency of Grizzco's part-time job offers will be increased. But keep in mind that you need to be at least at level 4 to take part in these part-time jobs. Don't miss this chance to try out Salmon Run!

The Sting Ray special weapon fires high-pressure ink that can penetrate walls to splat opponents on the other side.

In the Splatfest World Premiere demo, using the Sting Ray severely limited your mobility, but its mobility is being improved through an update to the game. With the new-and-improved Sting Ray, players will be able to suspend their attack by entering squid form, allowing them to reposition themselves before resuming their assault. This enables players to retreat at a moment's notice, or find a better vantage point.

[Public Squid Notice] We received a technical update about the SplatNet 2 Gear Shop in the Nintendo Switch Online app. During a short amount of time after the servers went live, a few gear items paired up with incorrect gear abilities. For example, Ninja Squid, which is meant to only attach to clothing, was attached to shoes. The gear in question are the four in the above image. As of now, this issue has been fixed, and such gear items will no longer appear in the Gear Shop.

An update will be made in the near future to replace the Gear Ability of these items with the same main Gear Ability that will be available in the stores in the game. We appreciate your understanding.

Tonight at 7pm PT, the Inkbrush will be in stock at Ammo Knights. Each swipe from this weapon isn't terribly powerful, but it allows you to move quickly while inking turf. Use this mobility to flank the enemy team and splat 'em before they're ready! The Inkbrush set comes with the Splat Bomb for its sub weapon and the Splashdown for its special.

[Public Squid Announcement]: An update to the Splatoon 2 game has been released: Version 1.1.2. For details, please visit this page.

This update adjusts the number of points required to fill the special gauge for several weapons. It also fixes an issue that prevented ranking information from displaying properly when viewing "Past Records" for League Battle.

The next Splatfest is coming soon, and the theme is a clash of condiments: Mayonnaise vs. Ketchup.

The Splatfest event times are:
8/4 (Fri) 9:00 p.m. PT – 8/5 (Sat) 9:00 p.m. PT

As a reminder, at the end of the event, the winning side will be determined by Popularity, Solo Win percentage, and Team Win percentage. And this Splatfest theme will be shared globally, though results will be tallied and shared region by region.

Don't forget you can team up with friends in Splatfest, though Team Mode is a little different from what you may be used to. This mode requires four players (must be friends with someone from the same team who is in the Lobby) to join a private lobby before being matched up against another team of four.

But will players choose mayo or ketchup? Only you can decide! And if you can't wait to show your support, you can go into the game later tonight to pick your team and/or submit some mayo or ketchup centric drawings. We do enjoy tuna fish sandwiches and potato salad here in the lab, but we'd also be lying if we said we didn't have a few bottles of spicy ketchup in the fridge. Decisions, decisions..

Say hello to the Dualie Squelchers! Tonight at 7 PM PT, these puppies will be in stock at Ammo Knights. This weapon appeared as the shooter-type Jet Squelcher in the original game, but it's been reborn as a Dualies-type weapon in Splatoon 2.

Its iconic longish-range and rapid fire return with the added dodge roll ability. It comes with a Point Sensor sub and Tenta Missiles special. We even noticed that while shooting from a crouch right after rolling, both Squelchers are temporarily merged - fascinating! Sheldon recommends this kit for nimble fighters that want to support their team and be a real nuisance to opponents.

Breaking News! A special stage called Shifty Station will be added to the rotation during Splatfests! It appears to be exclusive to Splatfest battles, and apparently the stage design can even change from Splatfest to Splatfest.
