Today is a two-for-one deal on updates!
The first update is a b-ball revelation. The Goby Arena stage definitively proves that Inklings play basketball–something that researchers have often argued about. The arena has all the comforts of a modern stadium: a full-size locker room, polished wooden court, concession stands, jumbotron, VIP seating, and swag shop.
Just like in normal basketball, controlling the space around the two hoops will be key. What's the phrase again? "Protect the rim," is it?
Also available today are the Dark Tetra Dualies. It's an intimidating name to be sure, but this four-nozzle wonder also lets you execute up to four dodge rolls in a row! What technique! Rounding out the kit is the Autobomb sub weapon (to sniff out sneaky enemies) and the Splashdown special (to launch an attack from above). In other words, this is a kit meant for players who like to surprise their enemies.

Just in! Details on the Shifty Station layout for this weekend's Splatfest. Containment chambers will drop down after a certain time and seclude part of the stage. It appears you cannot ink the secluded area from the outside, leading us to believe that whichever team gets access to the containment areas as they close down will gain the edge in turf coverage.

Breaking News from the latest Nintendo Direct! The first paid DLC is coming to Splatoon 2 this summer. Players will take on the role of an Octoling for the very first time in this large-scale downloadable content! This full-on single-player adventure spans 80 missions starring Agent 8, a new character who awakens without her memories on a dark subway platform. Navigate this mysterious underground test facility in a desperate battle to reach the surface of Inkopolis. Escape from these twisted depths, and it seems you'll finally be able to join multiplayer matches as an Octoling! How is this possible!? Does this mean we now need an Octopus Research branch too?
In addition to paid DLC, the Nintendo Direct presentation also included details on a major free update (Version 3.0) coming late April that will bring 100+ new pieces of gear, more stages rolling out throughout spring (Piranha Pit, Camp Triggerfish and Wahoo World) and a new rank (Rank X). Rank X appears to be an extreme rank, even higher than S+.

It appears that a new weapon will be making a sploosh at Ammo Knights tonight prior to Splatfest. The Neo Sploosh-o-matic has the same close-combat functionality as the Sploosh-o-matic, but with a neat, custom look. Some may even say that it has a neo look, ha! A good kit for strategists, this kit also comes with the Squid Beakon sub weapon to help your teammates Super Jump in, and Tenta Missiles to lay down covering fire.

X Rank
X Rank is an extremely challenging Ranked Battle experience targeting the best of the best players. Players who are S+10 and above in the current ranking system will be re-registered as X Rank. For reference, below is a breakdown of players across each rank (as of 2/20/2018):
※Calculated based on players that played Ranked Battle within the last week
※Because we rounded up from the hundredths decimal, the total may not be 100.0% exactly
Once Ver.3.0.0 is live, players who are already S+10 or higher will be displayed as X Rank. After Ver.3.0.0 goes live, players who rank up from S+9 will rank up to X Rank.
About X Power and Ranking
Players who have ranked up to X Rank will battle for X Power rather than the Rank Meter. Players with similar X Power levels will be matched together even within the same rank of X Rank. Once a month, for each of the 4 different Ranked Battle modes, 500 players with the highest X Power will be announced on SplatNet 2.
Also on SplatNet 2, for each weapon, we will announce one player that had the highest X Power compared to other users of that weapon. This way, players can see others that use the same weapons they do.
Along with the monthly ranking announcement, X Power will reset to "Calculating" status. During the time of the reset, players whose X Power ended up lower than a set threshold will rank down to S+9. However, if X Power drops far enough, players may rank down to S+9 on the spot rather than at the time of the reset.
Changes Related to X Power Reset
Along with the monthly X Power reset, we anticipate the following changes:
Change in Weapon and Stage Additions
Up until now, new weapons have been added approximately once a week, but moving forward, it is more likely that a batch of several weapons will be added once a month.
Furthermore, stage additions are more likely to debut once a month at the time of the monthly reset.
Ranked Battle Stage Limitation
Currently, over 20 stages are rotated across 4 different battle types in Ranked Battle mode. This allows players to enjoy playing a variety of stages, but it takes an extremely long time before a specific battle type and stage combination reoccurs. This may keep players from mastering their strategy and achieving even more high-level play.
After Ver.3.0.0, the Ranked Battle stage roster will be limited to 8 per battle type. Then, at the monthly X Power reset, the stage selection will refresh to a different set of 8.
Turf War and League Battle will retain all stages in rotation.
Timeline for Changes
These changes will come into effect via Ver.3.0.0 scheduled for late April, 2018.
The first X Power reset is scheduled for May 31st.
After that, Resets will regularly occur on the final day of every month.
Summary
We've revised the system in hopes of encouraging players of all ranks to enjoy improving their play, as opposed to simply focusing on ranking up.
This change will only affect Ranked Battle, but Splatoon 2 is comprised of several additional modes including Turf War, Splatfest, and Salmon Run. We will continue to update and improve Splatoon 2 and we appreciate your continued support.

Our research appears to be on the nose this time: the H-3 Nozzlenose D to be precise – available tonight! This version of the H-3 Nozzlenose has the same stats, but new flair. This is very handy when showing it off to your friends…not that scientists such as myself value such things…harrumph. Rounding out the kit are Suction Bombs (which we hear really "suck" for your opponent) and Ink Armor to help the fortitude of your fellow squid-mates.

The protagonist in Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion is No. 10,008, aka Agent 8. Agent 8 has lost its memory—it doesn't remember who it is or how it ended up underground. While it seems that most Octarians are pure evil, it appears this one has had its very nature changed somehow by having heard the Squid Sisters' Calamari Inkantation. It's up to you to help this lost Octoling escape from this mysterious subterranean world.

Agent 8 will face over 80 tough tests on the journey out of the underground. With a little help from 'Off the Hook' though, Agent 8 will be able to skip the tests that are just too difficult. And don't worry, even if you skip some tests you'll still be able to play as an Octoling once you escape the underground.

Octolings in Inkopolis Plaza? This is highly irregular! It looks like they'll be joining in on Regular and Ranked Battles, and they'll have the same stats and abilities as an Inkling. Because of their similar sizes, they'll also be able to wear the same gear as well.
Once you've helped Agent 8 reach the surface and completed the Octo Expansion, you'll unlock the ability to play as one of these tentacled terrors.

This is Cap'n Cuttlefish, leader of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, which secretly protects the world of Inklings from Octarian forces. He looks very old, but won fame as a brave fighter. In order to move around the underground world, a subway system called Deepsea Metro is essential. The ecosystem of the underground seems to have developed uniquely within its closed environment. Therefore, passengers you can see in the subway look quite different from residents above ground. And while they look a bit grim, it seems they're not bad guys.

This is one of the stations where Deepsea Metro stops. Each station is directly connected to a respective test facility in which various tests await Agent 8. Each station will offer a unique test; for example, there appears to be a test in which you must clear an area only using special weapons.

Once you meet a certain condition after the V.3.0 update, Callie of the Squid Sisters will appear in Tentakeel Outpost in Octo Canyon. Given how famous the Squid Sisters are in the Inkling world, this must be a good place to avoid being mobbed by fans. Callie will also offer recent news about Agent 4.
