Turf War
Turf War is a mode in Splatoon. It is classified as a Regular Battle. Players must ink the most turf to win the match, and are split into two teams of four.
History of the mode
Turf War was announced at E3 2014. It was the main mode for people to try out at the time since only 10% of the game was done at that point in time. Turf War was all the developers had.
Description
Turf War is playable by eight people, each on their own console. They are divided into two teams of four, each team assigned its own ink color. Teams must attempt to splatter their ink around the arena avoiding enemy shots along the way. After the timer reaches 0, Judd calculates what percentage of the arena is covered in each team's ink. The team with the highest percentage of coverage wins the round.
Stage Schedule
Stages seem to, for the time being, rotate out every four hours, at 2 am/pm, 6 am/pm, and 10 am/pm EST. The change in stages in accompanied by and announcement by the Squid Sisters. This announcement will also boot all players out of the tower after they finish their current match.
Vibe Meter
In the lobby of the tower and when waiting for a match to begin, the Vibe Meter can be seen. On the Vibe Meter is a title and a number of flags. Every time the player's team wins, one flag is added to the Vibe Meter and, conversely, every time they lose, a number of flags (dependent upon the current meter level) are deducted. If the player leaves the game mode and speaks to Judd in Inkopolis, he will reward them with cash based on their Vibe Rating. He will, however, only do this once per stage cycle. The following table lists are levels, flag penalties, and payouts:
Meter Level | Flags | Penalty | Payout |
---|---|---|---|
Chill Lukewarm (Eur & Aus) |
0 | 0 | 0 |
Toasty | 0.5-3 | -0.5 | 100 |
Smokin' | 3.5-6 | -1 | 400 |
SO HAWT!! On Fire! (Eur & Aus) |
7+ | -1.5 | 1400 |
Also, once stages are changed out, the Vibe Meter is reset to Chill. Thus it is important to cash out with a good Vibe Rating if the player really needs the money.
Strategies
It should be reminded that the player mainly splatters ink on the horizontal surfaces because walls and other vertical surfaces do not add to your percentage count. Walls should only be splattered to get up to high places. In certain maps climbable objects are the main vantage point for both teams, allowing players to spray ink further while forcing the opposing team back.
A quick way for players to be able to see who is currently in the lead is to refer to the Squid icons at the top of the screen. As well as displaying player status - the size of these Squid icons in fact determines who is in the lead, meaning the larger Squid icons determine which team is currently in the lead. A "Danger!" icon appears over a teams icons when the corresponding team is at least 10% coverage behind.
