User:Trig Jegman/File Guidelines

From Inkipedia, the Splatoon wiki

To keep files organized on Inkipedia, users should follow the guidelines specified below. When uploading an image, it needs to have an appropriate name, description, and source.

File name guidelines

An appropriate name is one that describes what the image is. Names should not detail where or how the image is going to be used on the wiki itself. Numbers appended onto names are acceptable for use in series of screenshots or for images that differ a little but enough to warrant a separate upload. Names should never be made up of numbers only or time stamps. A good question to ask oneself when uploading is whether someone could describe the file's contents by its name alone, without seeing the file itself.

Only proper names/nouns (NPC, location, mode names, etc.) need to be capitalized in file names; for instance, there is no need to capitalize the word artwork in S Inkling artwork.jpg.

Regarding Splatfest screenshots specifically, use of the event's short name is preferred in filenames, if applicable (i.e. Fam vs. Friend related images should use "FrostyFest").

File extensions

Note that file name extensions are case-sensitive; for example, Image.jpg is not the same as Image.JPG. Please always use lowercase file extensions.

Similarly, we disallow .jpeg in titles, because of the duplication risk with .jpg titles. For JPEG files, please use the .jpg extension.

Albeit OGG is being phased out entirely, audio-only OGG files should be have the .oga extension and video-only OGG files should have the .ogv extension. Only mixed media (audio and video) should use the standard .ogg.

Symbols in names

Symbol Allowed? Notes
#<>[]_{|}/: Due to MediaWiki technical limitations.
_ is in this list as MediaWiki replaces it with a space.
/ is technically allowed, but creates a subpage in the file, which can cause errors with rendering tools.
: is technically allowed, but causes errors in pre-parser templates and other wiki markup.
"\?* Due to Windows restrictions; protects users from such errors.
'&%+=^`~¡. Sometimes These symbols are only allowed with good reason, such as when it matches the name of the in-game item. Much of this list has to be HTML-style encoded. This may cause errors and should be avoided unless it is more beneficial to the wiki for the symbol to be present.
. is in this list as it represents a file extension. Some file rendering does not work for images with multiple periods.
$(),-;@ Should only be used in cases of the official names or terminology at hand doing such.
Non-printable characters MediaWiki limitation; not helpful regardless.

In cases where official names and/or terminology includes any of the disallowed characters, the most sensible resolution is to remove said problematic characters.

Abbreviations

Inkipedia makes use of consistent abbreviations to help simplify the discussion of certain games or game modes. These abbreviations should not be used on main articles directly, but are the standard for organizing file names and templates.

Mode abbreviations should be appended after a game abbreviation (i.e. S3 TC subject.png).

Even though Octo Canyon, Octo Valley, Octo Expansion, Side Order, Salmon Run and Salmon Run Next Wave are not explicitly standalone games, they are major modes — both respectively on par with, yet distinct from, their corresponding games' multiplayer portion. As such, they are treated as if they were separate releases for the sake of organization and consistency. Think of the PVP multiplayer (4v4 or 2v4v2 online battles), PVE multiplayer (Salmon Run) and singleplayer (story campaigns) modes all being separate releases.

File template

The bulk of file information is handled by the File template. For a more in-depth description of how the template works and of its parameters, consult the documentation page.

All files must have a proper description and source added to them in order to remain on Inkipedia. In many cases, the addition of the game and type parameters will automatically categorize the file for the user. In instances where none of the existing types appropriately cover a file's categorization, the category (or categories) in question should be manually added instead.

Example of the File template when filled out:

Summaries and descriptions

An appropriate description consists of a short text noting what the file is or what it contains, along with links to the relevant article(s). Descriptions of in-game screenshots should contain information about the level and general area in which it was taken, as well as any specific action which is taking place.

Sourcing

Files must be sourced accurately; if the file you are uploading is not your own screenshot, creation or rip, you must attribute the appropriate source within the File template. Failure to comply will result in the file being removed from Inkipedia.

If the image you are uploading has been sourced from somewhere on the web, you must have a link to the webpage the file is on, and a direct link to the file itself. If it is an image from a Twitter or Tumblr post, you must archive the entirety of the post as well in the appropriate Inkipedia archive (respectively, the Twitter archive or Tumblr archive).

File rips from SplatNet 2 and SplatNet 3 are allowed on the wiki.

File rips directly from the game files are also allowed, but using an intermediary dataminer hosting such files as a "second-hand" source is overall preferred over uploading them directly to the wiki.

Files sourced from the following websites are not allowed on Inkipedia:

  • Fandom (fandom.com)
  • PidgiWiki (pidgi.net)
  • KHInsider
  • All instances in which the author has expressly forbidden re-uploads of their posts' contents
  • Piracy sites (i.e. dedicated, organized gallery pages, containing full scans of artbooks or manga volumes)
  • Other image hosting sites that primarily contain NSFW content (i.e. if one click off the Splatoon content leads to NSFW imagery)

Adding files to articles

Groups of images in a given section covering the same subject should be placed within a gallery. In cases where a gallery section exceeds 20 images on a page that is over 50,000 bytes, the images should be moved to a subpage located at Subject/Gallery and linked to via the gallery template.

Captions function as alt text; every image in any section should have a caption built-in. Captions should be brief and descriptive, and supplement related text material. Similar to file template descriptions, links to the appropriate subjects should be added when applicable, though links should only appear roughly once per (sub)section. For files that do not normally have a caption, such as those in tables, alt text should be provided by adding |alt= after the file name, and the desired alt text after the equals sign.

Image captions should generally avoid:

  • Use of the word "ditto" or similar referencing of "nearby" images/captions
  • Periods at the end of final sentences
  • Humorous or otherwise subjective content

When adding videos to articles, make sure to provide a link directly to the file as part of the file's caption with the following code: (link to file)

User images

Main article: Inkipedia:Policy/User content

Users are permitted to upload files for use on their user page or respective projects. They must be marked as such using |meta=user in the file template, which adds them to Category:User files. User files still must follow all other file guidelines.

Files that are unused or that belong to inactive users may be deleted without notice.

A limit of 7 user files has been set. Files uploaded past this limit will be deleted. For more details on this limit, see the user content policy.

File editing

Fan-edited images are generally outside the scope of Inkipedia. Please do not upload edited images for use in wiki articles. However, uploading edited images as user images is acceptable.

Editing images is defined as the following:

  • Adding text to images (e.g. labeling sections in screenshots)
  • Combining several images into a collage or "stitching" them together
  • Making images transparent
    • Do not attempt to make an image transparent yourself. Others' transparent edits of artwork posted online are not acceptable either: instead, find an official image that already has transparency. If an official transparent image is unavailable, then a non-transparent image must be used.
    • This way, readers do not have to see any jagged edges, color distortion, or other inevitable visual errors that result from background removal, and they can benefit from the intended full context of the image; furthermore, the official status and integrity of the image is maintained.
    • Such fan-made transparency is sometimes referred to as "fansparency".
  • Using AI to enhance images
    • Do not use AI upscaling, or any sort of upscaling at all. By definition, this involves an algorithm having to make "guesses" on the color of each newly-created pixel in order to expand the size of the image, thereby making said image an inaccurate representation of the source material. If the image is so small that you think it should be upscaled, then upload the original image anyway (possibly with the addition of the Improve quality template) and look for a larger, official image later.
    • This way, readers can enjoy the intended appearance of the image, and the official status and integrity of the image are maintained.
    • In the case of game screenshots, use of 1080p capture cards is the best way to get the best possible image size, but the consoles' built-in lossy .jpg screenshot methods are also acceptable. Do not upscale otherwise legitimate screenshots.
  • Converted file types (i.e. .jpg files converted to .png)
    • The following types of file conversion are allowed:
      • .webp files to .png
      • .jp2 or .jpeg2000 to .png
      • .ogg to .oga or .ogv
      • .wav to .mp3 (unlikely)

Editors may reach a consensus to use an edited image for a particular purpose — i.e. for use within templates, or to combine an extremely large amount of similar images —, disregarding a guideline if they feel that the agreed-on edit is an improvement for the wiki.

Cropping/trimming (unedited) images and videos is allowed; in the latter case, video clips may be edited to play one after the other if necessary.

In general, while cropping is an allowed form of image editing, full uncropped images should be used wherever possible if the full image is available — though this does not apply to scanned material.

Crops of whole illustrations that redirect focus onto individual characters should not be used in character-specific galleries; the full image accompanied by a caption pointing out the relevant character at hand suffices. An exception is made for screenshots taken from promotional videos, where crops may be necessary to highlight the subject matter.

Handling videos

Video files must be in .mp4 format for maximum compatibility. Demonstrative videos (i.e. a clip showing a particular animation) may have their sound muted.

YouTube videos may be embedded into a page via the following code: <embedvideo service="youtube" dimensions="300" description="channelname">link</embedvideo>

Social media rips

To download an image from Twitter Twitter at maximum quality, you must open the target image in a new tab and add orig in the source URL. For example, a name=large at the end of the URL would become name=orig.

To download a video from Twitter Twitter, you must make use of external video downloading tools, or request a staff member make use of the "upload via URL" function. Most official promotional videos uploaded to Twitter by Nintendo are accompanied by a 1:1 equivalent YouTube Youtube video upload; whenever possible, substitute the Twitter video with the Youtube one.

To download images and videos from Tumblr Tumblr at high quality, you must log into a Tumblr account, reblog the post in question, then request the media from your blog is exported. To do so:

  1. Select the account settings menu (gear icon).
  2. In that menu, there should be a "Blogs" section in the lower right-hand corner.
  3. Locate then click your blog name (the blog onto which you reblogged the relevant post).
  4. Scroll to the bottom and click the "Export [blog name]" button.

The export process make take some time to complete. Eventually, it will generate a .zip file containing all the media found on your blog; it is recommended to set up an otherwise new account containing only the posts with images relevant to wiki uploading in order to speed up the exporting process.

Capture devices

Full quality screenshots and videos of Splatoon series gameplay can be taken through a capture card. Screenshots obtained using the Switch or Wii U built-in screenshot function will be lower in resolution quality than a capture device screenshot; the Wii U web browser screenshot function creates 960x540p images, and the Switch screenshot function creates 1280x720p images.

Higher quality images taken via capture devices are appreciated, but not essential; therefore, Inkipedia editors may use whichever method they prefer to take screenshots, be it the built-in screenshot function or a capture device. When both options are available at hand for a given image, the higher quality image will replace the lower quality image.

When using a capture device, it is best to capture at the native resolution of the game. For example, while the Wii U is capable of 1080p output, Splatoon has a native resolution of 720p, so a Wii U set to 1080p will upscale Splatoon's 720p video output to 1080p — resulting in blurry output. To properly capture the game in this example, it would be necessary to set the Wii U to 720p in system settings.

Capture settings for consoles with games covered on Inkipedia
Console Native resolution Optimal capture settings Notes
Wii U TV screen 1280 x 720 Set Wii U and capture device to 720p
Gamepad 854 x 480 Cannot be captured without the use of modded hardware
Nintendo Switch 1280 x 720 Set Switch and capture device to 1080p Only obtainable when in docked mode; impossible with a Switch Lite
3DS family Top screen 400 x 240 Cannot be captured without the use of modded hardware
Bottom screen 320 x 240

When obtaining captures of games on any consoles not mentioned here, stick to that console's maximum resolution.

Screenshot guidelines

When uploading screenshots of gameplay, try to minimize the presence of reticles or other UI features — this can typically be achieved by equipping a scoped charger. For Splatoon 3, disable the sensor from the Return of the Mammalians Hero Gear, avoid Homing Shots color chips in Side Order, and use Photo Mode with the UI turned off whenever possible.

Though not a hard rule, it is recommended to try and imitate the official promotional characters' appearances in demonstrative screenshots and clips, for consistency's sake. For example, when taking screenshots of Octo Expansion gameplay, this would involve changing the appearance of the player's Agent 8 to match one of that character's "official" designs beforehand.

When taking screenshots or clips of regular multiplayer gameplay, turn user posts off and ensure no inappropriate usernames or Splashtags are visible (see our inappropriate content policy for more information). If user generated content or inappropriate language is discovered to be in an image already uploaded to the wiki, it should be replaced; do not blur the offending content or try to censor it in other such ways, as image editing is generally not allowed.

These rules do not apply to:

  • Official promotional images
  • Images created by others for non-wiki purposes that are being added to the wiki (e.g. images attached to Tweets that are being archived)

Other sources

Screenshots and footage obtained via emulation are allowed; all related images should be noted as such exclusively in their File template's description. Please do not describe any specific emulators or methods used in the process; direct links to emulators or ROM images are prohibited.

Screenshots and footage containing modded gameplay are allowed, so long as:

  • The applied mods are not cosmetic in nature (i.e. no custom gear, UI, ink colors etc. are visible)
  • Images and videos obtained via modding are noted as such where it is appropriate (primarily the File template description; file captions on articles should note whether said screenshot/footage is unobtainable during normal gameplay)
  • The content being photographed via modding does not conflict with our leak policy.

In any case, files obtained via authentic, unmodded hardware are generally preferred. Please ensure that your emulator and/or modded device have been appropriately configured to output images as accurate as possible (i.e. in the original resolution, with appropriate FPS locks).

Emulated and/or modded screenshots and footage that have been uploaded elsewhere on the web are allowed to be used on the wiki as a citation.

Other cases

Manga-related files

In regard to the various spin-off Manga series, editors may only upload images that have been provided as official promotional material, or direct scans of their own physical copies. If the manga in question has not been released physically and is instead published online, any material may only be uploaded if it is available for free on an official basis. Uploads of fan-made translations ("scanlations") or otherwise pirated copies of physically printed manga materials are prohibited. Please refrain from uploading whole page scans of any manga to the wiki.

According to their X/Twitter bio, any artwork that Hinodeya Sankichi, author of the long-running Splatoon manga, shares on their X/Twitter account is not allowed to be reproduced. As such, we do not allow uploads nor archival of any of them; instead, please directly link to the Tweet(s) containing such artwork on the related pages.

Artbook materials

Editors may only upload artbook-related images that have been provided as official promotional materials, or direct scans of their own physical copies. Please refrain from uploading whole pages of artbook materials to the wiki; images cropped as to only show the specifics of the topic being discussed in the article at hand are the generally anticipated scan format.

Inkipedia does cover concept material, albeit to a limited degree: the official Splatoon artbooks qualify as concept material from front cover to back cover, yet we cannot within a fair use model reproduce paid publication material in its entirety, even in the name of encyclopedic coverage. Therefore, we cannot allow "complete" coverage of Splatoon concept art. Individual pieces of such text or art from the artbooks may be transcribed and/or uploaded if they are deemed relevant to individual topics/pages, but full concept art coverage is not possible. Please refrain from uploading whole page scans of artbook materials to the wiki.

The only full-page scanned material allowed are front and back covers.

Archival-related files

Main article: Help:Archiving posts

As non-Nintendo (user-generated) posts may be used as citations on Inkipedia, we request for them to be added to our Twitter and/or Tumblr archive to ensure the relevant material is preserved if applicable. There is little restriction on the user-generated files that may be uploaded to our Twitter and Tumblr archives; in the interest of complete, well-rounded archival, please upload any files attached to the posts being archived exactly as they are found in said original posts.

User-generated images uploaded for this purpose should be categorized as internet archive files. Tweets archived in this way are expected to be wiki relevant, but do note that their inclusion in our archive does not automatically mean their related files must be used elsewhere across the wiki. For example, if an informative user-generated Tweet being used as a citation contains a Marie meme image, that image should be uploaded then added to our Twitter archive, but it should not be added to Marie's gallery page or anywhere else on the wiki.

Further help

  • To view or search through previously uploaded files, go to the list of uploaded files; (re)uploads are also logged in the upload log, and deletions in the deletion log.
  • To include a file in a page, use a link akin to one of the following:
    • to use the full version of the file
    • to use a 200 pixel wide rendition, in a box aligned to the left of the page, with "alt text" as the caption
    • :File:Name of the file.mp4 to link to the file directly without displaying it.
    • See our help page on the topic for further information.
  • Make sure the width of an image that's included in an article doesn't over-extend the width of the page.
  • If you are unsure about something, ask an administrator or another member on their talk page, or find us on Discord.
