DJ Octavio

DJ Octavio is the leader of the Octarians, and the final boss of Splatoon's Octo Valley.

Appearance

Unlike most Octarian fighters, which appear to be severed tentacles, DJ Octavio is an actual octopus in his entirety. He resembles a giant red-purple octopus with a permanent angry expression on his face. His tentacles bare large green X-shaped scars, similar to the ones seen on other bosses. On his head sits a large gold helmet, fashioned similar to a samurai helmet, with an octopus-shaped emblem on the front. He sits inside of a flying machine equipped with a pool of purple ink and a turntable, which he plays using plentiful stalks of wasabi. The turntable has four cannons on the front, two extendable fists and a set of thrusters that allow it to stay airborne.

Attacks

This boss uses everything the player had learned throughout the levels in Octo Valley. During the boss fight, DJ Octavio uses several moves to deal with players:

  • Octorpedoes that shoot out from cannons on the front. They vaguely home in on the player, but are primarily used to cover the ground in ink.
  • Two giant fists that can be extended to try and punch the player. If shot at before they hit the ground, they will fly back into the machine and damage it, pushing it backwards.
  • Small missiles that resembles a disco ball. If these bombs explode on the ground before players shoot them, they will spawn an enemy. Shooting them makes them to explode, but the enemies won't appear on the ground. Which enemy that spawns depends on which phase of the fight players are on.
  • Killer Wail. Unlike Inkling's special weapon of the same name, this variation is smaller and slower and unable to hurt players if they are hiding inside their own ink.
  • A massive, octopus-shaped bomb that explodes into a massive amount of an enemy ink. If it is sent back at DJ Octavio, he will send it back to the player two times until he is ran out of fists to punch it back. These bombs are necessary in damaging him greatly and thus defeating him.

Sunken Scroll Appearances

Shown here in this sunken scroll you receive in Mission 16, it seems to be that DJ Octavio can assume human-esque form, as Cap'n Cuttlefish can do the same.

Trivia

DJ Octavio trapped inside a snowglobe-like tank.
  • After being defeated for the first time, DJ Octavio can be seen in the world map, imprisoned in a snowglobe-like tank near Cap'n Cuttlefish.
    • If the player chooses to fight the final boss again, the dialogue will be different, instead describing a scenario in which DJ Octavio has escaped from his prison and recaptured Capn' Cuttlefish.
  • DJ Octavio has several quotes that are different based on the region of the game, as shown below in the gallery.
  • Near the end of the boss battle, the Squid Sisters override DJ Octavio's radio to play their song in the background until he is defeated.
  • When designing DJ Octavio, the development team of Splatoon decided on the name "Takowasa" first. Then he was changed from a wasabi maker to a DJ, followed by scratching music being brought in. The music starts with a rhythm that goes like 'don don don don', at which it was decided to match the rhythm with DJ Octavio's wasabi making.[1]
  • All Great Octoweapons have fleshy octopus tentacles with X-shaped scars as a weak point in Octo Valley. These tentacles appear similar to one of DJ Octavio's tentacles, including the X-shaped scar.
