Ink in action

Ink is the main projectile used in the game Splatoon as well as a way to get around. It comes in a variety of team-based colours. Ink stains walls and the ground, but goes through grates and can't be splattered on barrels, mats and glass. It allows the player to camouflage, and ambush enemies.

Purposes

Ink can be used in a variety of ways such as being used as a projectile.

Hiding in ink

After getting hit by enemy Ink in some way, depending on the weapon used, an Inkling will get splattered and will eventually respawn. Ink can also be fired at the ground, walls, and other surfaces. Once a surface is coated in Ink, Inkings in squid form can swim through it, allowing them to traverse the area much quicker than when walking. When staying still in similarly colored Ink, Inklings in squid form can hide and ambush enemies, and when moving they will only create small ripples. When attempting to swim or walk through enemy Ink, Inklings take damage and their movements become very slow.

An Inkling using an Inkrail

In Hero Mode, Ink is used in even more ways. Inkrails exist for transportation, as in squid form Inklings can swim from one end to the other. Sponge Blocks, when squirted with Ink, will expand and then can be used as a platform.

Ink will slowly refill automatically. Swimming through similarly colored Ink while in squid form will refill Ink faster.

Colors

Colors for Inklings and their ink include orange, blue, green, mint, violet, cyan, yellow, scarlet, and magenta. Additionally, white ink appears in Hero Mode, but not during Turf wars, while violet ink is used in Hero Mode by the enemies. Callie and Marie are shown to have black and white ink, respectively, although these characters are never seen using their ink.

Ink colors in Hero Mode are set per chapter, although in Turf Wars, they are random. Additionally, the colors are usually somewhat contrasting to avoid confusion; for example, violet and magenta are never both used in one battle, as they would be too similar.
