Version 2.12.1 is a revision to Splatoon that came into effect on 3 August 2023 at 01:00 UTC,[1] after an unusually long server downtime for this game and Mario Kart 8, which were both taken down on 3 March 2023 for emergency maintenance that spanned nearly five months, the longest downtime in the history of Nintendo online gaming. It is the latest version of Splatoon,[2] and was the game's final end-of-life bug fix as Nintendo had ended online play for Nintendo Network on 8 April 2024 at 23:00 UTC.[3]
Although this update is minor, it fixed a critical exploit known as ENLBufferPwn, a vulnerability in the common network code of several first party Nintendo games which enables hackers to take full, remote control of users' (unmodified) systems during online multiplayer sessions.
