Save Scumming is the act of restoring older save data if a player is not happy with their current gear Abilities or Rank.

Save Scumming can be applied with several methods, all of which are covered in this article.

Creating a Splatoon Backup

The Wii U console allows players to copy data from system memory to a USB drive. Save Scumming requires copying data to the USB drive and the USB drive or the System memory serves as backup data to return to. If the USB drive and save data is present, the game will read the USB drive data instead of the system memory data.

  1. Insert a USB drive to the Wii U console.
  2. If the drive is not already formatted for compatibility with the Wii U, allow the Wii U to format it. Any data on the drive will be deleted.
  3. Enter the Settings on the Wii U. Enter Data Management.
  4. Copy the Splatoon data from the system memory to the USB drive.
  5. Turn off the console and remove the USB drive. If it is left in the console, it will be used in place of the system memory for saving Splatoon.

Re-rolling Gear Slots

This type of scumming involves rolling gear at Spyke until the desired abilities are achieved, and restoring older save data if the desired result is not achieved with the coin or sea snail budget.

  1. Create a Splatoon backup.
    • If the USB drive is left plugged in, the USB drive data will be used and the system memory will be the backup data. If the USB drive is removed, the USB drive will be the backup data.
  2. Go to Spyke and re-roll slots on gear that needs better abilities.
    • When the desired abilities are achieved, copy the current data to replace the backup data, so that the save with the desired abilities becomes the new backup.
    • If you are exceeding a cash or Super Sea Snail budget, or getting too many bad re-rolls, copy the backup data to replace the current data.

Gear Ordering

Ordered Squash Headband from Spyke.

This method involves ordering gear until the desired gear arrives, and returning to an older save if undesirable gear arrives.

Odds of getting sub abilities on ordered gear
Level Settled sub Ability The gear actually comes
No sub Ability 1 sub Ability 2 sub Ability 3 sub Ability
4~9 One 70% 30% - -
Two 70% 29% 1% -
Three 70% 29% 0.9% 0.1%
None (Same as in store) 100% - - -
10~15 One 50% 50% - -
Two 50% 45% 5% -
Three 50% 45% 4.8% 0.2%
None (Same as in store) 100% - - -
16+ One 30% 70% - -
Two 30% 60% 10% -
Three 30% 60% 9.5% 0.5%
None (Same as in store) 100% - - -
  1. Play an online match until seeing someone with the desired gear. Exit the lobby, go to Inkopolis, and find the correct Inkling.
  2. Order their gear by talking to them and pressing X. Wait until the next day.
  3. Create a Splatoon backup before talking to Spyke on the day the ordered gear arrives.
  4. Talk to Spyke to see if the gear arrived with the desired slots.
    • If there are 3 sub abilities, buy it.
    • If there are 2 sub abilities, play to see if the desired ability will unlock in the 3rd slot. If not, return to the older save and repeat.
    • If there are 0 or 1 sub abilities, return to the older save and repeat.
    • If the result is bad, copy the USB backup to the system memory, remove the USB drive, and wait for the next day. There will be different abilities and a different amount of slots on the gear the next day.

Changing Timezone

This is a technique that allows the player to see the ordered gear without waiting days for the order. It works in countries that have multiple time zones, and in countries with colonies in different time zones.

  1. Find a piece of gear to order.
  2. Get queued ordered gear and talk to Spyke to make sure he gets rid of his delivered gear.
  3. Update the save file; copy the file from the USB stick to the Wii U.
  4. Click 'Change User Information' in the Nintendo Network ID settings.
  5. Change the time zone to the next day to see the ordered gear.
    • If you get 3 sub abilities, buy it and you got what you ordered.
    • If you get 2 sub abilities, update the save file, order it, and play and unlock the 3rd slot. Repeat until getting the desired result.
    • If the result is bad, change back the time zone and restore the save file from the Wii U to the USB stick. Try different gear and see how many slots are given.

Demonstration

Rank

This method is not recommended because if a higher rank is achieved it will not reflect the player's current skill level. This method allows players to rank-up or avoid de-ranking. Essentially this method involves returning to an older save data if upon losing games or de-ranking.

  1. Create a Splatoon backup.
  2. Play ranked battles.
  3. If de-ranking or a large loss of points occurs, copy the backup data to the current data.
    • Once satisfied with the rank, copy the save data to the backup data to save that rank.
    • If unsatisfied with the rank, copy the save data from the backup data to your current data to return to the previous rank.
