Version 2.12.1
For Splatoon
Version history

Version 2.12.1 is a revision to Splatoon that came into effect on 3 August 2023 at 01:00 UTC,[1] after an unusually long server downtime for this game and Mario Kart 8, which were both taken down on 3 March 2023 for emergency maintenance that spanned nearly five months, the longest downtime in the history of Nintendo online gaming. It is the final version of Splatoon,[2] released as an end-of-life bug fix as Nintendo went on to end online play for Nintendo Network on 8 April 2024 at 23:00 UTC.[3]

Although this update is minor, it fixed a critical exploit known as ENLBufferPwn, a vulnerability in the common network code of several first party Nintendo games which enables hackers to take full, remote control of users' (unmodified) systems during online multiplayer sessions.

Adjustments and fixes

  • Fixed vulnerability relating to online battles.

In March 2023, Nintendo paused network services for the Wii U games Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 to address a vulnerability related to online play. The issue has now been fixed, and so we will resume online play for these games based on the schedule below. Please accept our sincere apologies for the extended waiting period.

3 August 2023 Resume service — To resume online play, downloading a new update will be necessary for each title per the release timing noted above.

If further issues occur which make it difficult to continue supporting online play, we may have to discontinue the online play service for the Wii U games Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 at short notice. Should this occur, please note that offline play would continue to function normally.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

  • This is the first update to Splatoon in nearly seven years; the previous update, Version 2.12.0, released on 13 September 2016.
  • This is Splatoon's only update with a tertiary version number.
  • This update is the game's only update since its sequel games, Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, released.
