Inkipedia:Demotion/Archives/P.J. GT

From Inkipedia, the Splatoon wiki

P.J. GT (talk | contribs | logs) I am requesting the demotion of P.J. GT from patroller back to autopatrolled. Per the primary bullet points listed in Inkipedia:Demotion, I believe two of these criteria have been met.

The user does not use their rights

Simply put, viewing the Patrolled Edits log demonstrates that PJ has not used the primary tool of the patroller, that being patrolled edits in nearly a year: This revision on Pearl from late June, 2022, was the last time PJ has actually utilized the patroller tools. Furthermore, ever since receiving these patroller tools there have been multiple reminders to actually use the tools provided.

This user also has not utilized any rollback features recently, and while difficult to see a full log of changes, at the minimum none have been made in the past 90 days as can be seen here.

Lastly, while a member of the Inkipedia Discord, P.J. has not contributed to any staff decisions for any context. While being a member is not mandatory, being able to provide feedback on administrative decisions is crucial for the staff team to function as a whole.

These are all the specifically listed criteria via Inkipedia:Patrollers. The only other criteria that is provided by Special:ListGroupRights is the ability to move pages while suppressing redirects. With one sole exception in May, PJ has not moved any pages since September of last year. This evidently is not a highly needed tool for wiki performance.

The user does not use their rights in a way helpful to the Inkipedia community

If not utilizing the primary tools of suppressed redirects, patrolled edits, and staff decisions, then what is this user contributing to? Primarily, his userpage. At the time of writing, out of 700 recent edits, 454 of those edits are made to his user page or user space in some capacity. This is over half of the edits performed. The 700 prior to it is similar, with 413 out of 700 edits also being on some form of user page. Since writing, these numbers may have changed slightly, but only by a margin of say 5. The point still stands, vastly over half are in user space. The priority is clear: Focusing on documenting his own characters or in-game accomplishments over page development.

I would almost say this becomes harmful, as the position or general perception of the Patroller role is a highly-experienced "role-model" editor, or otherwise a figure people should look up to for their own editing practices. The message sent out here is that focusing on one's own user content is completely fine as long as there is a few regular edits here or there, and that is simply not the point or goal of Inkipedia—We are not a social site, and user content should not be prioritized or encouraged in this way.

Other sticking points

While I believe that focusing on wiki productivity should be the general focus of the conversation as it is what the demotion is targeting, I believe there may also be some exterior factors that impact this decision as well. The "Pearlina" and "Shiver's gender" discussions primarily demonstrate that some personal beliefs may get in the way of demonstrable facts, as well as making some community members feel uncomfortable broadly. This edit in particular has always rubbed me the wrong way.

I am also concerned about some general anger issues that present themselves. P.J. has been warned before for rude edit summaries, Have frustrated two different artists, and responded with general hostility when reasonably accused of vandalism. Frustrations often seem to be taken out on the site.

Conclusion

I'm not even sure the user in question wanted to be a patroller from the beginning—even the person who nominated P.J. for promotion was unsure of their choice after the fact. This is not to say that his edits have not been high quality or invaluable, but rather that having the patroller status does nothing, nor has done anything to enhance or supplement these edits.

Remove P.J. GT's patroller rights

(Return to Autopatrolled). Voting will end in four weeks (Midnight UTC July 3) or in three weeks (Midnight UTC June 26) if voting is unanimous.
