From Inkipedia, the Splatoon wiki

Template:Game-infobox Splatoon (スプラトゥーン Supuratūn) is an upcoming 2015 third-person shooter developed and published by Nintendo. The game focuses on a war between Inklings, using weaponized ink to cover the most territory. The game will release on Wii U sometime in May 2015. The game was first revealed at E3 2014.

Story

With the hope of invading the Inklings' world, the Octarians built an underground facility known as Octo Valley. After the disappearance of Zapfishes from the Inklings' world, the protagonist, wearing the Hero Suit, must infiltrate the base and rescue all the Zapfishes.

Gameplay

Splatoon is a third-person shooter game focused on online multiplayer, in which eight players are put into two teams of four (colors include but not limited to blue, orange, pink, etc.). Players may switch between the two forms of their Inklings - their human form, in which they can use weapons to spread ink and splatter opponents, or their squid form, which can swim through ink at amazing speed, recharge the player's ink tanks, or hide. Players can also find Power Weapons, such as paint rollers, launchers, and splatter bombs, which have increased power. The winner (which is the team that covers the most terrain with the ink of their color) will be decided by a cat referee.

Jump into Octo Valley, where you will face the evil Octarian army in a solo splatter mode.

Trivia

  • Splatoon is a portmanteau of "splat" and "platoon". This fits the game's theme perfectly, as it focuses on platoons that splatter colored ink.
  • The Inklings' squid form shares strong similarities with Super Mario's Bloopers.
  • In the single-player trailer from the November 2014 Nintendo Direct, a frame of artwork consists a Blooper from the Super Mario series and Octoroks from the Legend of Zelda series
