The Ink Pump

Welcome to the Ink Pump. Similar to Wikipedia's village pump, the Ink Pump serves as a general place for the Inkipedia community to discuss the wiki as a whole, whether it be ideas, proposals, technical issues, or notices.

Remember to put new discussion sections at the bottom of the page.
You may also wish to view recent talk page discussions.
Archives available here. Inactive topics should be archived when this page reaches 40 topics or 50,000 bytes. Any Inkipedia user can archive the page.

Another Inkfest, Anyone?

The picture: an amazing person called @Jacobearth comes up with an amazing Inkfest idea to help me with my Inkfest idea block. The theme: Stringer vs. Splatana! Who's up for it? GET HYPE YA'LL! Octoling E s3 (talk) 00:32, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Two things: one, Yall made a nice choice
Two: I do believe this would go into the inkfest page talk. Chrome Wolf (🎙, 🗂) 15:31, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Alright! Also, would you be down to participate? Jacobearth • chit-chat 15:35, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would love to. I will see if I have time Chrome Wolf (🎙, 🗂) 15:36, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, we don’t quite have the date worked out, but it will be sometime in December so that people can use the new weapons and stages. Jacobearth • chit-chat 15:38, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cool idea, but is there a page for this? I'm definitely interested in joining!   ArivakiVA   (talk) 15:41, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I asked you on your talk page how to make one XD. Jacobearth • chit-chat 15:44, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Go to inkfest and check out what it says there. It can be found on the navigation menu to your left. Xan 15:46, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, but there isn't a page yet. Appreciate the help anyway, Xan-san!   ArivakiVA   (talk) 15:48, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I was saying to check out the details from the link on the sidebar. Xan 15:50, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yup! I did that! Jacobearth • chit-chat 16:22, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I kinda want to ask this now, before I forget, but is Discord gonna be mandatory? You might not have figured that part out yet, but I just wanna know since I can't use Discord yet. Thanks, and I look forward to the fest, since nothing really happened during mine! :,D   ArivakiVA   (talk) 17:59, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Nope! Discord is not mandatory, I don’t have discord either xd. Jacobearth • chit-chat 19:04, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Glad to know I'm not the only one without Discord! XD Octoling E s3 (talk) 22:54, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I hate splatanas. With, a, PASSION. I would be a stringer if it meant purging ourselves from those wretched weapons.
So yeah sure, sounds cewl. Wind Waker 13:28, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oi, there. Octoling E s3 (talk) 02:24, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, uh, er- I don’t hate the people who use them. But nothing, I say NOTHING, should be able to 1-hit-kill anyone. Rollers, splatanas, blasters, stringers, all those things have good range, BUT ARE JUST PLAIN OL’ OP UP CLOSE.
Except snipers, they’re fine. Wind Waker (talk) 11:42, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As a Squiffer and Inkbrush main, respect on the charger comment. Also I kinda like Splatanas. I'm just better with a Stringer. Massive respect to those who spend their time mastering the Splatana.   ArivakiVA   (talk) 19:57, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I lose respect for people who use splatanas. They are jus’ toooooooo OP Wind Waker (talk) 21:29, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And thank you, @Wind Waker! Octoling E s3 (talk) 23:20, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
AS long as we're united under a common liking. (or downright obsession ;) ) Octoling E s3 (talk) 23:19, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ye, I’m just sarcasticly exaggerating, I don’t actually hate splatana users, I just like sarcasm.
A lot. Wind Waker (talk) 01:26, 3 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Same. Octoling E s3 (talk) 01:45, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Nvm, I can’t respect all snipers, snipewriter is OP as all get out. Wind Waker (talk) 12:02, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So is the Nova lol. Octoling E s3 (talk) 23:21, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, honestly, I hate the Snipewriter. Kind of a shame, since I was looking forward to it since I'm a charger main. The Nova wasn't as good as I thought it would be either. :/   ArivakiVA   (talk) 19:27, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, then again, I'm just really unlucky.   ArivakiVA   (talk) 19:27, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But the Big Swig is a pretty good roller main. Octoling E s3 (talk) 01:46, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeeeee, I hate that weapon too. It's like, "lets combine the two most powerful rollers, Carbon, and Dynamo, to make a roller that can take you out faster than you can say 'Ouch'" Wide range, fast, and if close enough, can one hit you. Wind Waker (talk) 18:09, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Pretty sure the roller can only one-shot you if it uses a vertical swing directly in front of you. The weapon's okay, I guess. Also I like being sarcastic too, to be honest.   ArivakiVA   (talk) 18:22, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We've gotten pretty off-topic to this Ink Pump's comment discussion, huh? Oh well.   ArivakiVA   (talk) 18:23, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry, this has been a cool conversation, but sadly, it can't be on the ink pump. Maybe on one of your use's talk pages? Thanks, Xan 18:31, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, I figured as much. I dunno who wants this to be on their talk page though. Maybe mine.   ArivakiVA   (talk) 18:34, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, but, it’s not really hindering wiki development in any way, so I would think it’d be fine. Wind Waker (talk) 13:36, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
True, but either way I'll copy-paste this conversation to my talk page anyway. For ease, and just in case.   ArivakiVA   (talk) 17:58, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Should we merge Salmon Run and Salmon Run Next Wave?

As it currently stands, I'm not sure if there's a reason to keep these pages separate. While changes were made between games, functionally I feel it's more apt to describe it as the same mode, with additional content. After all, other game modes (such as Splatfest and pretty much every Ranked mode) have seen adjustments between games. The "Salmon Run Next Wave" name, as far as I can tell, is exclusively used in promotional material, and in-game the mode is referred to simply as Salmon Run -- it's more likely that "Next Wave" is more meant to signify "Salmon Run is back, and bigger than ever!" more than that this is a new mode outright.

Besides that, I just think merging the pages would streamline the reading experience! "The Steelheads are Boss Salmonids that appear in Salmon Run and Salmon Run Next Wave in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3." feels way clunkier to me than "The Steelheads are Boss Salmonids that appear in Salmon Run in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3."

WayslideCool (talk) 14:12, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think this is a wonderful idea and am totally onboard. No further comments. Xan 02:51, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think they could be on the same page, but should be split from the two games. ℂ𝕙𝕣𝕠𝕞𝕖 𝕎𝕠𝕝𝕗 (🎙) 13:02, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh absolutely, it'd be formatted something like the Splatfest page where it has different sections for the different games, I think! Obviously there are still differences between the games that should be documented! WayslideCool (talk) 18:59, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sounds good to me! I'm in.   ArivakiVA   (talk) 19:55, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I disagree with this idea. SR and SRNW are different enough to be on separate pages, not merged together. Although SRNW is still salmon run, it has too many changes to merge both salmon run pages together. OrderSquid38 [Talk] 01:20, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How do I start?

Hi! im new here and I want to help with some competitive strategies, but how and where should I put them, like telling people how if you throw a sprinkler next to the rainmaker shield it will continue to run even when the shield is over it allowing it to take out the shield very quickly. Ratch (talk) 13:48, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You should probably put that under the competitive strategy page for the sprinkler. Here's a link to the competitive weapon strategy pages so you can get started! Weapon strategy Hope this helps, and I can't wait to see what strategies you add!   ArivakiVA   (talk) 17:57, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What's wrong with the damage stat on the main weapon pages?

I check this wiki every now and then for random info, mostly badges or new weapon stats. I noticed today that the damage stat is listed incorrectly on a lot (all?) of the main weapon pages. The Aerospray is listed as doing 10 damage while it actually does 24 in game. Splattershot Nova does 24 damage, but is listed as doing 20. I attempted to correct them but they were undone almost immediately with a note that just said "misinterpreted" but no explanation. I'm not stupid am I? Does the damage stat mean something else on this wiki? Because I have looked all over every page I could to try and find what that number means, but it doesn't say anywhere. Could someone explain what that's actually supposed to be, and why this wiki is set up like this? Because it's misleading and (apparently) I keep giving out misinformation when I reference the numbers here. Wynton (talk) 22:11, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi there. The reason for this confusion is that the table's bars are ment to mimic the in-game stats bars (Press ZL on a weapon while in the equip menu (plus while in Ammo Knights)), not the weapon's actual damage output (they are usually shown on the table or in the article's data sections. Hope this clears everything up. Stay fresh! P.J. GT(talk) 22:30, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's fun aesthetically I guess, but if that's the case then shouldn't the #/100 numbers not be there? And shouldn't the base damage stat not be hidden away in some easily missable bullet point in a different section? And shouldn't there be an explanation of that anywhere on inkipedia? Just feels like there wasn't a ton of thought put into that, the intention was more about matching what the game looks like, which is pointless anyway because the little bars in-game are practically useless. This might seem dumb tbh but I would assume the most important number people look for is how much damage something actually does, and for like 3 months I didn't use the Aerospray because I thought it did 10 damage/hit. Wynton (talk) 22:44, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, I think you’ve got the right of it Wind Waker (talk) 17:11, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Having the numbers for the rating bars makes it easier to compare. Thinking they are "useless" is just your opinion, other people including myself find the rating bars useful to get a quick idea of where a weapon fits among a class.
The actual damage is also in the infobox, and is already added for Splatoon and Splatoon 2, it just hasn't been added for Splatoon 3 apparently, of course anyone is free to go in and add those values to the infobox. Heddy (talk) 01:25, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why can't I reply?

I'm trying to reply to a comment, but the reply button disappearing when I press it. Hurray (talk) 19:48, 19 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm having the same problem. The reply buttons are part of VisualEditor (VE) which has always been buggy in general. I'll ask the webmaster if they can fix it. The webmaster was already recently looking into another VE problem where reply buttons or other VE features don't work on pages with a / in the title such as "User:MyUserName/Sandbox".
In the meantime, please add your comments by using the source editor. If you haven't done that before, all you really need to know is that colons (:) can be used at the beginning of comments to indent (:: indents two levels, ::: indents three levels, and so on...), and 4 tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comment adds your signature. The reply button does indenting and signing automatically, so when you're not using the reply button you need to type the colons and tildes yourself. Heddy (talk) 00:37, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Hurray The issue has been fixed! Heddy (talk) 23:07, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you Hurray (talk) 11:13, 23 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Big Issue with Talk Pages

I have seen on some user talk pages (ArivakiVA's in particular), that replies using the Reply feature can get moved to the far right of the page and even get condensed *so* much, that words just get go down on that side on one row as the conversation goes on. Just bringing this up. Sincerely, P.J. GT(talk) 23:01, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

When that happens a user should not use the reply button, and they should instead use the source editor so that they can outdent their next reply. Wikipedia has a fancy arrow template to show when an outdent occurs, but really no template is needed, just use zero colons on your next reply. Heddy (talk) 23:25, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Another thing to remember is that not every reply must change the indent level. You can just remain on the same indent level when appropriate, like this comment you are reading right now is on the same indent level as my other comment. Heddy (talk) 23:28, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So really, the best solution to this "problem" is to educate people about indenting when you see the problem occur. We could also probably add a talk page filter that disallows edits with excessive indents and displays a message asking people to outdent their comment instead, if there is demand for such a filter. Heddy (talk) 23:30, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Considering that this happened on my talk page, thanks! Also, a filter for outdenting would be appreciated.   ArivakiVA   (talk) 23:27, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ink Colors

How do you change a custom made ink color to be {{Ink|splatfest option}}? I would like to register the ink colors for Spicy vs. Sweet vs. Sour, but I don't know how. YOLO2020 21:53, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Account names

Does anyone know if its possible to change an account name after you've already created an account? User:Hescracked75 19:11, 4 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can fill out a request on the page Inkipedia:Requests for Rename. Odd (Talk) 03:13, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Competitive namespace shortcut

I would like to discuss whether namespace shortcuts would be a good idea for Inkipedia or not.

MediaWiki has the option to configure namespace aliases which can function as a shortcut. For example, some wikis have H: as a shortcut for Help:.

Specifically, the shortcut I have in mind is "Comp:" for "Competitive:". So instead of having to type "Competitive:" in the search bar to get search suggestions, we would only have to type "Comp:". The same would apply to adding links in articles; [[Comp:Splattershot]] would automatically link to Competitive:Splattershot if this namespace shortcut were to be configured.

Is there any reason to not set up this shortcut? Heddy (talk) 01:51, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Nope, but something @Prod would have to set-up. Slate Talk Contribs 03:38, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This would definitely help a lot for convenience sake. As someone constantly looking up these competitive articles for more exact stats on each weapon, this would help a lot so I don’t have to type in “competitive:” just to get to where I want (I am also a slow typer so it’s double the convenience). But, would typing in “competitive:” still work? If it wouldn’t, I don’t believe we should change it because it would be harder to access for players who don’t know/recognize that “comp” is an abbreviation of “competitive” if we changed it to “comp:”. However, if “competitive:” still works, I would be all for this decision! Jacobearth • chit-chat 03:39, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jacobearth "Competitive:" would still work. By the way, you can use the "Strategy" link in the sidebar if you want to find those pages without typing. Heddy (talk) 04:27, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm new to Wiki stuff and have no idea how things work lol.
But this seems like a nice change, being able to quickly access Comp pages help. Akira Chisaka (talk) 07:22, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So no objections to this idea? I'm gonna bring it up with Prod if there's no further input on this. Heddy (talk) 02:16, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The "comp" alias has been added to Inkipedia! Heddy (talk) 00:16, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tournaments

This is the one part of the Inkipedia (besides brand new content, of course) that I feel is massively underdeveloped/largely out-of-date. Now I understand what we’re going for, which is a nice resource for players to find out about tournaments, but, I don’t really think that we’re really accomplishing that goal. The reason that I’m putting this here instead of updating it myself: there is an expansive amount of content that we need to cover before we get up to date. I don’t really know what to do about this part of the wiki, but ignoring it won’t make things any better. Jacobearth • chit-chat 21:55, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Only official tournaments (meaning tournaments hosted by Nintendo) are allowed in the main article space. Unofficial tournaments can be covered in the "Competitive:" namespace if they meet certain criteria mentioned in this policy page: Inkipedia:Policy/Notability#Tournaments. So if you are thinking that there aren't many tournaments covered, then the reason is that you're probably thinking of unofficial tournaments, which are usually outside the scope of Inkipedia.
If you are thinking of improving Inkipedia's coverage of official tournaments, that would be great. If you get started, you may find that others will join you, but if not, then that's just how it is... not every subject is going to attract a lot of editors, so just improve pages at your own pace and don't feel concerned about the supposed quantity of work to do. Wikis are never done so it's a waste of time to complain about the quantity of work when that time is better spent improving pages. Heddy (talk) 02:13, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Maybe we could start something up on Inkipedia:Projects? Xan 12:31, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, I probably will @Xandpochondria. Would you join me? Jacobearth • chit-chat 19:58, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Just a Question!!

Does anyone know what is the max of pixels for a page (sandbox, talk page, user page etc.) Thank you Splat.girl (talk) 13:32, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What do you mean by “pixels”? Do you mean max amount of pictures, or max page size? Jacobearth • chit-chat 14:30, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I meant max page size. Splat.girl (talk) 14:59, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You can make stuff as wide or tall as you want, but anything over 400px wide is likely to not fit well on mobile. If by "page size" you mean the byte counter, well there's no limit for that. Heddy (talk) 20:05, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Trivia for Gear

The section “Trivia” is one of the final sections of an article. The majority of articles that I have seen have the Gallery and then Trivia. In many of the gear articles the the trivia section isn’t in a consistent spot. For example, the page Annaki Beret the trivia section is after the gallery. In the page Octoking Facemask the trivia section is before the gallery. I checked the trivia policy page and have found nothing about this. To keep consistency with the gear pages, I think we should have the trivia section after the gallery. Let me know what you all think. Odd (Talk) 21:38, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The policy states that ALL trivia sections should be one of the last sections, and only Etymology and the references and so on may come after them. Miss Delibirda (talk) 21:40, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree since putting the trivia after the gallery would make more sense. Jacobearth • chit-chat 21:40, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Needs Update

Hello,

Would anyone be opposed to creating a new template: {{NeedsUpdate}}. I feel as if the construction template doesn't work in places like the strategy articles, as it's already been built, just needs to be updated.

Thoughts?

Xan 13:07, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I created a mock template in my sandbox here. - Xan 18:38, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oooh, I think that's a neat idea! That could possibly be useful if some pages look like they're all good at first glance. Maybe we could use Team Time Travel or Team Past's ink colors for the border or key words lol FancyRat 18:59, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm open to anything, @FancyRat. Feel free to edit my sandbox, too. Thanks! Xan 00:41, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So, I've seen people make custom pages from scratch. How would one make one? Octoling E s3 (talk) 00:48, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
