The Splatoon Speedrunning Moderation Team (often shortened to Splatoon Speedrunning) is a group of speedrunners who manage the Splatoon speedrunning scene through organizing various speedrunning events and are also responsible for curating and moderating the speedrun.com leaderboards on behalf of the community. The team consists solely of volunteers from within the community and has existed since the launch of Splatoon 1.
Speedrunning is the act of playing a video game with the goal of completing it as fast as possible. The most common way of speedrunning Splatoon is to submit speedruns to the website speedrun.com to compete for the fastest speedrun time. Other ways of speedrunning includes races which is either hosted privately, or done on websites like racetime.gg and therun.gg.

Speedruns are divided into categories that impose various limitations on a runner and requires a certain task to be completed in the game. Some of the most well known speedrun categories are Any% and 100% but the various Splatoon leaderboards contain many more categories. On speedrun.com Full-Game and Individual Level speedruns are listed separately. Individual level categories are speedrun categories of individual levels or much shorter segments of a game. These categories generally last between 20 seconds and 3 minutes, where as a Full-Game run generally last between 10 minutes and 10 hours.

Splatoon 1
Splatoon 1 is currently the only game where using an emulator to speedrun the game is allowed. But due to there being multiple differences between the WiiU gameplay and Emulator gameplay; the community has decided to separate them into two different subcategories.

Splatoon 1 Category Extensions Individual Levels
A theme throughout the Splatoon Series on speedrun.com is having shotless level speedruns listed on the category extensions page. Splatoon 3: Side Order is the only Splatoon game on speedrun.com that has a category extensions page without any shotless level speedruns, this is because Side Order doesn't have any individual level speedruns on the base game leaderboard. Shotless level speedruns restricts the runner to complete a level without pressing ZR to shoot ink in any way. Pressing R to throw a bomb or pressing Right Stick Click to activate a special is allowed.

31 out of the 32 levels have a shotless speedrun leaderboard, the only level without a leaderboard is (Boss 5) - Enter the Octobot King! due to there being no known ways of completing it without pressing ZR.

Octo Expansion Category Extensions Individual Levels
Octo Expansion is also the first single player campaign without access to multiple sub-weapons per level, which makes many more levels impossible to preform shotless. Out of the 78 base game individual level categories, only 36 have a shotless leaderboard. Octo Expansion is also the earliest leaderboard with a tutorial level speedrun on the leaderboards, this level is not speedran shotless.

Splatoon 3
Due to the high number of glitches patched in Splatoon 3, the community has had to separate categories into different restrictions depending of what version of the game you have access to.

There are mainly 3 version splits:

* 1.0.0 through 1.1.2 is called Unrestricted.
* 2.0.0 through 4.0.2 is called No Menu Storage + Pause Abuse.
* 4.1.0 and later is called No Patched Glitches.

This is due to the glitch Pause Abuse being patched out in 1.1.2, Menu Storage being patched out in 2.0.0 and Surge Roll being patched out in 4.1.0.

Runners are still allowed to submit speedruns to any of the version subcategories regardless of their game version, as long as they do not preform any of the glitches that are banned in the subcategory.

Splatoon 3: Side Order
Some Side Order speedruns are separated into what timing method the runner uses. The game keeps track how how long the player has been in each floor and it shows a combined time at the end of a completed run through all 30 floors. This time does not include the time spent in the elevator, loading time, Vending-Machine Corners, and any time spent before exiting the cage at the start of a level. The categories NG+, NG+ Saved Seed and Eight's Palette all have a subcategory for separating between In-Game Time and Real Time.

Speedrunning

Speedrunning is the act of playing a video game with the goal of completing it as fast as possible. The most common way of speedrunning Splatoon is to submit speedruns to the website speedrun.com to compete for the fastest speedrun time. Other ways of speedrunning includes races which is either hosted privately, or done on websites like racetime.gg and therun.gg.

Leaderboards

Splatoon Speedrunning uses the website speedrun.com to display and rank speedruns. Each game gets it's own separate leaderboard page but DLCs like Octo Expansion and minigames like Tableturf Battle are usually split into separate leaderboards. Some games may have a Category Extension leaderboard which acts as a second leaderboard and is used for more unusual speedrun categories.[1]

Speedrun Categories

Pressing R to throw a bomb or pressing to activate a special is allowed.

31 out of the 32 levels have a shotless speedrun leaderboard, the only level without a leaderboard is (Boss 5) - Enter the Octobot King! due to there being no known ways of completing it without pressing ZR.

Splatoon 3

Due to the high number of glitches patched in Splatoon 3, the community has had to separate categories into different restrictions depending of what version of the game you have access to.

There are mainly 3 version splits:

 • 1.0.0 through 1.1.2 is called Unrestricted.
 • 2.0.0 through 4.0.2 is called No Menu Storage + Pause Abuse.
 • 4.1.0 and later is called No Patched Glitches.
