Etymology

"Marination" is a portmanteau of "Marina" and "nation" (the latter possibly partly derived from the Suede Nation Lace-Ups). This combination likely arises from the slang sense of a group of people connected only by a common interest; in this case, specifically being fans of Marina. It is the equivalent of the Japanese "Iidachi", a portmanteau of "Iida" (Marina) and "tomodachi" (friend). It may also be a play on the noun form of "marinate".
