Grass vs. Fire vs. Water was a Splatfest event in Splatoon 3. It was announced on social networks on 7 October 2022 and in-game on 4 November 2022 at 08:00 UTC. This was the third Splatfest in the Splatoon series to be themed around the Pokémon franchise after Pokémon Red vs. Pokémon Green and Pokémon Red vs. Pokémon Blue.

Details

This Splatfest was a celebration of the then-upcoming release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which would launch roughly a week after the Splatfest on 18 November 2022. The Tricolor Turf War stage was Sturgeon Shipyard.

In the Pokémon series, the player has a choice between three Starter Pokémon and choose one to accompany them as they start their adventure. Players choose between a Grass-type, Fire-type, and Water-type Pokémon, with those of different types having various strengths and weaknesses against each other.

Merchandise

T-Shirts and keychains based on the Splatfest teams were made available from the My Nintendo Store in Japan, United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Hong Kong.[1][2] In North America, the Splatfest Tees were only sold in the Nintendo New York store.[3] Most regions outside of Japan sold the shirts as pre-orders to be delivered at the start of 2023.

Schedule

This Splatfest event ran in multiple phases:

Results were announced in game on 14 November 2022 at 02:00 UTC.

Halftime Report

At the halfway point in the Splatfest, Deep Cut revealed the team currently with the most overall Clout, used to determine the team playing the role of defense (and starting in the center of the stage) during Tricolor Turf Wars.

“Ooo! It's a collab with Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet!”

Shiver

“Which partner Pokémon would you choose? Grass-type, Fire-type, or Water-type?”
Big Man

“Aaay! (Whoa! I wasn't expecting that!)”
Shiver

“Too bad it's an easy choice. Grass-type Pokémon are deadly elegance personified!”

Frye

“FWOOSH! That's the sound of my Fire-type Pokémon incinerating your grassy elegance!”

Big Man

“Aaay! (Meanwhile, I'm just vibing and riding the waves. You know I'm going Water-type!)”
Shiver

“It's not which is "strongest" or "coolest." Which makes the best PARTNER?!”
Frye

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Big Man

“Ay. Ay. (But Water-types ARE the best partners. Fins down.)”

Big Man

“...Ay. (...Except for the both of you, I mean. Water-types have the fewest weaknesses!)”
Shiver
“How do you know so much about this?”

Big Man

“Aaay? (I guess us smooth, sleek, wave-ridin' creatures stick together, y'know?)”
Frye
“Whoa, yeah! You'd totally be a Water-type Pokémon. You're not a Pokémon, right?”

Shiver

“I suppose my lovely sharks DO enjoy the water. That's something!”

Shiver

“But no. For my first partner Pokémon, the logical choice is Grass-type.”

Shiver

“Don't I deserve the most relaxing type of Pokémon after winning both Splatfests?”
Frye
“Wow. WOW. You went there, huh?”

Frye

“Yeah, Shiver. Why don't you sit this one out after all that hard work?”

Frye

“Meanwhile, I'll be forging a bond with my partner Pokémon in the fires of friendship!”

Frye

“Plus, you can't Frye without a little heat. LIGHT IT UP! Fire-types, let's do this!”
Shiver
“There you go, thinking in terms of pure power again. It's cute.”

Big Man

“Ay... Ay! (Wait... but if we're talking power, Water-types drench Fire-types!)”
Shiver

“And Grass-types mop the floor with Water-types. This is why Power is a dead end.”

Frye

“But... Fire-types are strong against Grass-types! That means they're best, right?”

Big Man

“Ay. Ay! (I'm so proud of our teamwork. We came. We splashed. We conquered!)”
Shiver
“I'll take this opportunity to congratulate my team as well. Team Grass stood tall!”
Frye
“Well, you can't say Team Fire didn't bring the heat. We went out in a blaze of glory!”
Shiver

“I hate to say it, but Team Water really earned the W.”
Frye

“Whoa. Water starts with W! So, uh...what Shiver said. I can't top that.”

Big Man

“Ay? (So are you all convinced? Are we all getting in the Team Water pool together?)”

Big Man

“Ay? (What I mean is...we're all picking the Water-type first partner Pokémon, right?)”
Shiver

“Big Man! I thought you were the Pokémon expert around here.”

Shiver

“If we all choose the same type, it'll be harder to complete the Pokédex!”
Big Man

“Aaay! Ay. Ay! (You're right! I let the water get to my head. Forget everything I said!)”

“Ooo! Een Splatfest ter ere van Pokémon Scarlet en Pokémon Violet!”

(Oooh! A Splatfest in honor of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet!)

Haya

“Welk type partner-Pokémon kies jij? Gras, Vuur of Water?”

(What's your partner Pokémon type? Grass, Fire or Water?)
Ray

“Aay! (Wauw, er verschijnt ineens een wild nieuw Splatfest!)”

(Aay! (Wow, a wild new Splatfest suddenly appeared!))
Haya

“Alleen jammer dat dat een makkelijke vraag is. Gras-types zijn gevaarlijk én elegant!”

(Just a bummer that's an easy question. Grass-types are dangerous AND elegant!)

Muriël

“WOESJ! Zo klinkt het als mijn Vuur-Pokémon afrekent met die kasplantjes van jou!”

(WOOSH! That's what it sounds like when my Fire Pokémon deals with those greenhouse plants of yours!)

Ray

“Ayy! (Nu doe je nog stoer, maar mijn Water-type blust dat vuurtje snel genoeg!)”

(Ayy! (Now you're still acting tough, but my Water-type will put out that fire soon enough!))
Haya

“De vraag is niet wie er het sterkst is, of het coolst. Wie is de beste PARTNER?”

(The question is not who's the strongest, or the coolest. Who's the best PARTNER?)
Muriël

“Waarom kijk je mij nou aan?”

(Why are you looking at me?)

Ray

“Ay. (Maar als ik een partner moest kiezen, dan kies ik alsnog een Water-type.)”

(Ay. (But if I had to choose a partner, I'd still choose a Water-type.))

Ray

“Ay! (Met Water-types ga je niet snel nat, want die zijn maar tegen weinig types kwetsbaar!)”

(Ay! (You won't easily make a slip-up with Water-types, as they are vulnerable against a few types!))
Haya
“Eh, mij te ingewikkeld... Is dat serieus hoe je je keuze maakt?”

(Uh, that's too complicated for me... Is that seriously how you make your choice?)

Ray

“Ay? (Dat en als ik geen Pokémon kies die kan surfen, wat doe ik dan met mijn leven?)”

(Ay? (That and if I didn't choose a Pokémon that can surf, what am I doing with my life?))
Muriël
“O, tuurlijk. Jij zou zelf een Water-type zijn. Wacht... Jij bent... geen Pokémon, toch?”

(Oh, sure. You'd be a Water-type yourself. Wait... You're... not a Pokémon, are you?)

Haya

“Mijn lieve haaitjes zijn dol op water... Misschien is er toch iets voor te zeggen.”

(My sweet little sharks are fond of water... Maybe there's something to be said for it after all.)

Haya

“Maar nee, als eerste partner-Pokémon is een Gras-type de enige logische keuze.”

(But no, for a first partner Pokémon, a Grass-type is the only logical choice.)

Haya

“Gras om heerlijk in te liggen dromen van die twee Splatfests die ik al heb gewonnen...”

(Grass to lie in wonderfully dreaming of those two Splatfests I've won already...)
Muriël
“Wauw. WAUW. Dat moest je toch even laten vallen, hè.”

(Wow. WOW. You had to drop that, didn't you.)

(If you're so eager to rest, then why not simply skip this Splatfest?)

(Then, in the meantime, my partner Pokémon will get fired up for me!)

(You have to strike while the iron is hot. And it doesn't get any hotter than with a Fire-type!)
Haya
“Meteen weer zo gewelddadig, het draait toch niet alleen om brute kracht?”

(Why immediately so violent again, it's not just about brute force, is it?)

Ray

“Ay... Ay! (Maar... Als het om kracht gaat, dan winnen Water-types van Vuur-types!)”

(Ay... Ay! (But... When it comes to force, Water-types win over Fire-types!))
Haya

“En Gras-types leggen Water-types droog. Met alleen kracht ga je niet winnen.”

(And Grass-types lay Water-types dry. With force alone, you're not going to win.)

Muriël

“M-Maar... Een Vuur-type is weer sterk tegen Gras-types! Dus die is het beste, toch? Toch?”

(B-But... Then again, a Fire-type is strong against Grass-types! So that one is the best, isn't it? Isn't it?)

(A-ay! (And I'll rather continue surfing on my own wave – together with the «Water» type!))

(Ay. Ay. (And «Water» type will overtake everyone even in this! Easy as swimming!))
Notes: The pun is based on the Russian phrase "как пить дать" "kak pit' dat'" ("no doubt about something", "easy as pie"), which literally translates as "like to give a drink", "easy as having a drink". The word пить pit' (to drink) here is changed for the consonant word плыть plyt' (to swim).

(Ay... ay. (Everyone except you... Oh. The «Water» type has the fewest weak points!))

(Ay... Ay! (Fins to fins... Fish of a scale... In short, the waves are a sweet home for all of us!))
Notes: Big Man refers to the Russian phrase "Рыбак рыбака видит издалека" (the literal translation is "One fisherman sees another one from afar") which means "Birds of a feather flock together", "Like draws to like".

(Oh, how true! You yourself is a «Water» type after all. Are you sure you're not a Pokémon?)

(Sure, my sharkies can't live without water...)

(But I firmly decided: my partner Pokémon Starter will have a «Grass» type!)

(I already won two Splatfests, it's time to soak in the grass.)

(Gr-r-r. Was it necessary to remind about?)

(Be sure to not overwork yourself, Shiver! Stress is bad for health. You'd better skip the Splatfest!)

(And I'll fan the flame of friendship with my Pokémon meanwhile!)

(Give them some heat, «Fire» type!!! Frye the fire fury! BWA-HA-HA!!!)
Notes: This is a reference to Frye's Russian introduction "Звать Мурия... Танцующая фурия!" ("The name's Frye... The dancing fury!")

(Is this your «all brawn and no brains» again? It's even cute.)

(Ay... Ay! (Wait, but water puts out fire... Which means that the «Water» type is stronger!))

(So what? «Grass» will drink up all your «Water»! It's not about power at all.)

Trivia

  • This was the first Splatfest won by the team represented by Big Man, and the first in Splatoon 3 where Shiver's team did not win (including the World Premiere).
  • This was the first Splatfest where a team won in all categories.
  • This was the first Splatfest in the entire series where two teams (Grass and Fire) ended in a tie, both scoring 0 points. This is in part due to the fact that Splatoon 3 is the first game where ties are possible (given that there are three teams rather than two).
  • This is the first Splatfest in which the team winning at Halftime won the Splatfest.
  • The weapons shown in the official art correlate to the Pokémon types in the Splatfest.
  • The Splatfest Tee logos resemble Japanese names for the three types: クサ kusa (Grass), ほのお honō (Fire), and ミズ mizu (Water). The logos are also in the same style of SquidForce's starting tees: Splatoon 2 and Splatoon designs of the Basic Tee as well as the Tri-Shred Tee in Splatoon 3, respectively.
  • The Pokémon featured in the official art and on the backs of the Splatfest Tees are Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, the starter Pokémon of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Additionally, in the background of the official art, the silhouettes of the final evolutionary stages of all starter Pokémon from main series Pokémon games prior to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can be seen. These silhouettes are also seen in the backgrounds of the icons seen in-game for each team, with each of the Pokémon appearing in the icons of their type, arranged in the order of their introduction clockwise from the top-left.
  • The ink splats on each Splatfest Tee are the color of the type that is strong against the Grass, Fire, and Water types. The Grass tee has red splats, the Fire tee has blue splats, and the Water tee has green splats.
  • The color for Team Grass was supposed to be a more saturated   green. However, due to a bug the   green used was not replaced.
  • This is the first Splatfest in Splatoon 3 to feature plain-colored Splatfest Tees instead of tie-dye ones, the other two being Power vs. Wisdom vs. Courage and Lightly Salted vs. Consommé vs. Salted Seaweed.
