Hero Mode Part 1 is the eighth chapter of the Splatoon manga. It was first released on 28 February 2017.
Plot
Unlike the previous days, Goggles arrives for the meeting time early, only to remember today is a break from training, and he meets Rider instead. The two are shortly dragged by Cap'n Cuttlefish to save the Great Zapfish from the Octarians. They are assigned as Agents 3 and 3.5 (or "Agents 3") respectively.
Both Goggles and Rider wear the full Hero Suit while still keeping the gear they are named after, being the Pilot Goggles and Black Inky Rider with Goggles wearing his goggles with his headset and Rider wearing his jacket over his Hero Jacket. They also use the Hero weapons, with Goggles having the Hero Shot and Rider having the Hero Roller.
They battle against some Octolings, and one of them goes into a boss kettle, and tries to trick Goggles and Rider to go into the Boss kettle. Rider sees that it is a trap, but Goggles jumps in the kettle. They then both go into the kettle, and they have to face against the Octostomp. The Octostomp attacks, and Goggles and Rider dodge it. Cap'n Cuttlefish then tells them that they have to splat the Octostomp's tentacle, so Rider swims up the Octostomp's side, and splats the tentacle. The Octostomp then goes to attack Rider, and he dodges, unbeknownst to Goggles. Goggles goes to avenge Rider, because he thinks that the Octostomp splatted Rider, but Rider tells Goggles that he dodged. Cap'n Cuttlefish then tells them that it isn't over, and the barely dodge another attack from the Octostomp. The Octostomp's tentacle sucker then accidentally grabs hold of Rider's tentacle. Goggles then comes up with a plan for the Octostomp to let go of Rider. He goes to the Octostomp's feet, pulls it's boots off, and starts to tickle it. It works, but it isn't enough for the tentacle to let go of Rider. Goggles then throws a jar of Pickled Plums into the Octostomp's mouth, and the Octostomp lets go of Rider. Goggles and Rider then go and splat the Octostomp's tentacle, defeating it, and getting a Zapfish. But when they get out of the kettle and back in Octo Valley, they see that Cap'n Cuttlefish is being kidnapped by a UFO. The person controlling the UFO, who is DJ Octavio, says to give him the Zapfish that Goggles has. Goggles pulls on Cap'n Cuttlefish's leg and says to let go of him, and Rider pulls on Goggles and says to let go of Cap'n Cuttlefish. DJ Octavio then decides to "Forget it", and starts to fly the UFO, with Goggles hanging from Cap'n Cuttlefish and Rider hanging from Goggles. While they fly away, Agent 1 and Agent 2 come into Octo Valley, and wonder what is happening.
