Promotional characters, Hub NPCs and Miis
The promotional player characters of Splatoon (2015) [[User:Cackle/Promotional_characters#Splatoon|[1]]], as well as many hub NPCs across the series, seem to be named after Miis. While these are sort of documented on the FANDOM wiki, they arent documented on MiiWiki. The FANDOM wiki has good comments but it's not good for sourcing (and MiiWiki is a NIWA partner so we NEED to use that), so in order for me to talk about the Miis the Splatoon promotional characters are named after, I need to make the pages for these Miis (at least Kaori and John cmonnnn). I don't have a Wii U so it will be a bit hard to document the important ones (Kaori, John, Rui.. they are all from Wii Sports Club on the Wii U) & I have a Terrible way with words but I will figure something out.

Unlabelled excused fansparencies
A lot of the amiibo images from the Splatoon-Splatoon 2 era have fan-made transparency. These were uploaded when fansparency was allowed, so it makes sense. These are supposedly exceptions due to their use in infoboxes for amiibo gear, though they are still used in galleries and articles. In the case where fansparent images are used, we need to make sure they are ONLY used for infoboxes (& maybe as inline icons in text) and not anywhere else, and they should be properly labelled as unofficial transparent images that should only be used for the infoboxes (also can be used in userboxes since that's userspace, but thats unrelated to wiki stuff...). Maybe they could be marked as Inkipedia images? We also might need to rename the images to reflect their uses. The infobox templates might need to be modified as a result.
In the case where fansparent images are used with no official alternative, new files with proper sources need to be uploaded & replace all instances of the fansparent image being used. This is so if higher resolution official images are found, we can upload them as a new upload without messing with the infobox amiibo icons. Edited images should also be presented as unofficial since users may assume otherwise, with it being against policy (for the ~5 wiki viewers out there that know Inkipedia policies..).

Default lockers documentation
When post display is set to off, the lockers in the locker room are the same ones made by the developers seen in promotional videos and screenshots of the locker room. Like the developer-made posts, these should be documented.
In the direct, these lockers are attributed to the main eight promotional characters. VeronIKA's locker does conflict with the one shown in this render, though.

<dd>Target draft: Promotional characters</dd>
Promotional characters refer to the characters used in promotional material that are meant to stand in for a player. Typically, these are the Inklings and Octolings present on the box art, amiibo and crossovers. [talk about how there is a main duo and a main character in every game + oe bc idk how to do that right now. also talk about how theres a main 8 characters (oe messes with things here but we'll figure it out)] [talk about inconsistency and how they are not actual characters like the idols but are stand ins for players and can act as a representation of their respective games].

CLOWNFIS
| Labels found by the exihitions in Umami Ruins. "DEKKAI HITUDE NANNDESUYO" means "It's a big brush" in Japanese, possibly in reference to some art on the wall in this stage that seems to be depicting an ancient squid person with what looks like a large brush, which this label can be found next to. "OSHIRISU NO TENKU" is potentially a reference to the Yugioh card Silfer the Sky Dragon, named Oshirisu no Tenkūryū in Japanese. "NIDANNGUMIZA KOI" translates to "Text column 2 is thick". It's unclear what that text is in reference to. "RAA NOTAI YOSIN HA KAKOII" translates to "Ra, the god of the Sun, is cool", referencing Ra, the Ancient Egyptian god of the Sun.
| Sheldon's merit badges found on the wall of Inkopolis Square's Ammo Knights. "CLOWNFIS" is a misspelling of "Clownfish" and "BUCKIE" is the Scottish for whelk, corresponding with the art above it. In S2, the clownfish merit badge was not present, suggesting that Sheldon earned it some time between the release of Splatoon 2 and Side Order. <!-- found by me & art. rassicas found out what buckie meant. shoutout!! -->

LAN HENDRY
KAIHAT
K IERAN APTER
| The desktop of Marina's laptop in Side Order. While there seems to be a lot of gibberish, some of the program labels are meaningful. "MEBASU" is a transliteration of "Memverse", matching the app logo, while "IKORAIZA" is a romanization of the Japanese word for "Equalizer". "KAIHAT" comes from kaihatsu, meaning "development". This likely comes from the Japanese name of Marina's Dev Diaries, iida no kaihatsu nikki. <!-- found by me and Guster -->
| A ripped paper texture found floating in the background of menus in Splatoon 3, containing a mixture of random phrases and names. "LAN HENDRY" may be derived the name of an actor, Ian Hendry. Kieran Apter is also the name of a musician, though obscure so it may not be intentional. Dashes represent characters that are hard to make out due to the low texture resolution.

Splatfest art for Splatoon 3 has the same signature for each team. I've always been kinda curious about who that signature belongs to, so I looked into the Splatoon 2 art too and found they also have signatures! They're just very small ones at the bottom right of each icon. I'm still not sure who the Splatoon 3 signature belongs to, but I'm fairly sure the Splatoon 2 signatures are the signatures of the artists behind the art!!

Take everything you read here with a grain of salt. Sandboxes are generally used for testing, practice and personal projects. They are not held to anywhere near the standards of a regular mainspace page.

  • WikiBlame, a site that lets you find the revision that added a change
    • The language param should be set to "none" for English Inkipedia

  • Clear is used to force content below the template underneath the content above the template. It's useful for thumbnail images that overlap section headers and look bad as a result
  • Templatestyles can be used for external CSS <templatestyles src="User:Cackle/Sandbox/styles.css"/>
  • The <code> tag is good for showcasing example code that spans one line: |source=self
  • The <pre> tag is good for showcasing example code that spans over multiple lines.
    • A space at the start of a line works the same as a <pre> tag. Do not use this; it's confusing and looks bad.

To Do

- Consider recording all splatfest dance animations & general player npc animations and compiling them on the wiki. this is probably only possible for splatoon 2 with hacking. we still have time for doing it legit with s3 though !

Video advertisements and graphics [x]

Format

  • Merge stage sections with hub sections, making a single table with a location column
While this will lead to a lot of repetition of "Lobby/Hub" for Splatoon 3, a lot of advertisements found in Splatoon 2's stages can also be found in the hub. Having separate tables for hub ads & stage ads doesn't seem like it'll work for Splatoon 2, and possibly won't work for Splatoon 3 in the future. Regardless, this should be done for consistency.
  • Rework/fix tables
Currently, the tables don't look great on mobile. This is because the column widths are percentages as the default widths make the description as wide as possible and the outer columns very thin. This should be fixed.

Content

  • Add Splatoon 1 ads/graphics
Note: Will have to be recorded in-game as converting them to video using their frames is much more difficult than with Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3.
  • Add Splatoon 2 ads/graphics
  • Add 'First seen' information to Splatoon 2 tables
This will be tricky, but you may find information in the trivia sections of some articles, as well as in the version pages

Things to consider

  • Renaming the page
'Video advertisements and graphics' is a bit of a mouthful and is somewhat vague. Under this definition, the animations that appear on Splatoon 3's lobby tower could count, alongside the videos that play on the Squid Sisters' Splatfest trucks. The 'graphics' part was added due to non-advertising videos being included (the animations above the lobby entrance in S2, and now fest animations) but maybe "animation" would be better? but "video animation" doesn't sound great. Something like "Video advertisements and animations"? "In-game commercials and animations"? First one is basically just as vague, and think I prefer 'advertisement' over commercial, but that may just be me. Anyway, I'm still thinking about it.

Incomplete sources

This is mostly useless so I'm probably never going to go back and do this again, but if you search "Source=ingame" or "Source=in game" on here you will find over 150 files with like "in-game screenshot" or "in-game file" as their source. im guessing these all come from new users, misinformed users or before the file template was a thing. The plan is to stick a Incomplete Source on all of them, then ask the uploaders in question what their source was where thats sensible (e.g. a screenshot from 2022 at the latest and uploaded by an active user). My eyes hurt from staring at a computer all day though so I Will Not Be Doing That

Promotional characters, Hub NPCs and Miis

The promotional player characters of Splatoon (2015) [1], as well as many hub NPCs across the series, seem to be named after Miis.

The ones needed:

Hotlantis signature trivia

I need to wake up in 3 hours so I can't finish this rn. Additional information should be added regarding signatures and their suspected owners (within reason). I am not sure how to format it yet. Also I should probably reupload these images as texture crops... you gotta wait for that though, sorry.

Signature Character Reasoning
Mashup
  • Drawing of eyes resemble the expression in Diss-Pair's album art
  • Depicts piercings, with Mashup's piercings being a defining feature of his
  • 'W' may stand for 'Warabi'
    • 'W' also resembes his left tentacle, which has 2 points and piercings
  • Next to what seems to be Quinn's signature (band relation)
Quinn
  • Resembles "IKKN" or "IKKAN"
  • Next to what seem to be the signatures of Mashup, Ichiya and Murasaki (band relation)
Ichiya
  • Resembles イちヤ ichiya
  • Next to what seem to be the signatures of Quinn and Murasaki (band relation)
Murasaki
  • Has a drawing of Murasaki
  • Resembles ムラさキ murasaki
    • As I'm unfamiliar with handwritten Japanese and what features of letters are most important, I'm not sure if this interpretation is within reason. Though the さ is hiragana and the rest is katakana, the letter looks more like an upside-down さ than a サ, to me. LMK if I'm wrong, though I don't think I will add this without checking beforehand anyway.
      • I have been told this looks like 'generic signature scribble' so maybe not....
    • Maybe the Murasaki drawing is supposed to feature an upside-down M, meaning the ム is actually a U and we have 'MUラさキ' murasaki???!
  • Next to what seem to be the signatures of Quinn and Ichiya (band relation)
no image........ just pretend Yoko
  • Has a horn (defining Yoko feature)
  • Next to what seems to be the signature of Maya, and quite close to one that looks like Kitamura's (band relation)
no image........ just pretend Kitamura
  • Has a drawing of Kitamura
  • Close to what seem to be the signatures of Yoko and Maya (band relation)
no image........ just pretend Maya
  • Resembles Mやや myaya
  • Next to what seems to be the signature of Yoko, and close to one that looks like Kitamura's (band relation)

Current trivia point

  • The signatures on the exterior of Hotlantis appear to belong to several in-universe musicians from Splatoon and Splatoon 2. Various signatures have text that resembles a combination of English and Japanese writing (such as a signature that resembles "Mやや" likely being Maya from Ink Theory). A handful of signatures additionally feature the physical characteristics of musicians, such as a signature featuring a drawing of Murasaki's face.
    • The front window appears to bear signatures from the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook. Callie and Marie's signatures from Splatoon 2 can be seen on the central panel, and on the left is a large "ひめ" signature and a smaller "eだ" above and to its left, likely Pearl and Marina respectively.

Promotional Characters in the Splatoon series intro desc

Target draft: Promotional characters

Promotional characters refer to the characters used in promotional material that are meant to stand in for a player. Typically, these are the Inklings and Octolings present on the box art, amiibo and crossovers. [talk about how there is a main duo and a main character in every game + oe bc idk how to do that right now. also talk about how theres a main 8 characters (oe messes with things here but we'll figure it out)] [talk about inconsistency and how they are not actual characters like the idols but are stand ins for players and can act as a representation of their respective games].

CLOWNFIS

Sheldon's merit badges found on the wall of Inkopolis Square's Ammo Knights. "CLOWNFIS" is a misspelling of "Clownfish" and "BUCKIE" is the Scottish for whelk, corresponding with the art above it. In Splatoon 2, the clownfish merit badge was not present, suggesting that Sheldon earned it some time between the release of Splatoon 2 and Side Order.

MAPCBBE AIDMAOIFMAL

The text above the portraits for Memverse users seen on Marina's laptop in Side Order. Each label seems to start off meaningful ("IKA", "TAKO", "PFP", "MAP"), but quickly descends into gibberish. IKA and TAKO are the Japanese names of the squid and octopus, respectively.

KAIHAT

The desktop of Marina's laptop in Side Order. While there seems to be a lot of gibberish, some of the program labels are meaningful. "MEBASU" is a transliteration of "Memverse", matching the app logo, while "IKORAIZA" is a romanization of the Japanese word for "Equalizer". "KAIHAT" comes from kaihatsu, meaning "development". This likely comes from the Japanese name of Marina's Dev Diaries, iida no kaihatsu nikki.
SALVAGING... Loading text seen on Marina's laptop in Side Order as she's loading the files for the Memverse, with "salvaging" referring to the recovery of data lost due to corruption, deletion or it not being saved.
NEXT LOADING... Loading text seen on Marina's laptop in Side Order as she's loading the files for the Memverse.
UNFOLDINGG... Loading text seen on Marina's laptop in Side Order as she's loading the files for the Memverse.
PAIN The loading screen for a drawing program Marina uses in Side Order. "PAIN" is likely derived from "paint", possibly in reference to Microsoft Paint.

This needs to be formatted like how Lid reformatted everything here.

Some more loading text needs to be added. They can be found in where the rest of the laptop cutscene files are. More info in the All Side Order scripts sheet on the 29th row. There may be more meaningful runic script on this sheet, since they use it a lot in Side Order, and it's not all translated, but I'm willing to bet it's mostly gibberish.

Complex archive

A sort of maybe forever WIP plan to make a more complex tumblr archive template, that lets you put images wherever. Splits the template up into 3 parts: Header, Content & Footer. Header & Footer are the same as the regular archive, but Content will just let you put in raw wikitext, that'll be contained within a div and formatted by a class. I need to look more into templates to see whats possible and what's not. I hope it could be all 1 template, but I think each section could be its own template if needed. If thats too confusing then we could have another template that calls on those templates. I'm not sure if that's a good idea though.

Splatfest signatures

Splatfest art for Splatoon 3 has the same signature for each team. I've always been kinda curious about who that signature belongs to, so I looked into the Splatoon 2 art too and found they also have signatures! They're just very small ones at the bottom right of each icon. I'm still not sure who the Splatoon 3 signature belongs to, but I'm fairly sure the Splatoon 2 signatures are the signatures of the artists behind the art!!
