Since being launched, Splatoon has received version updates that corrected glitches, enhanced the gameplay experience, or added content. Most additional content released is included in the data of the initial version, and is unlocked by Nintendo later on. The August Update was the first update to add content such as weapons, modes, and gear that were not included in the initial version's data.

The following is a history of all versions. For a full list of known changes in each version, view the main article for that version.

2.12.0

Released on September 13th, 2016.

  • Fixed an issue which mistakenly allowed Sprinklers to be placed inside the Tower in Tower Control.
  • Kelp Dome: Fixed an issue in all game modes that allowed players to move inside the raised starting platforms.

2.11.0

Released on August 2nd, 2016.

  • Fixed an issue which prevented certain Roller and Brush weapons from registering direct hits with an ink fling attack while facing an opponent directly in front of them.
  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

Released on July 8th, 2016.

  • Fixed an issue in which players sometimes appear to be floating in the empty space outside the stage caused by falling off the map while super jumping.
  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

2.9.0

Released on July 6th, 2016.

  • Now compatible with Callie and Marie amiibo.
  • Adjustments have been made to specifications for certain Main Weapons.
  • Adjustments have been made to specifications for certain Special Weapon Effects.
  • Ancho-V Games: Fixed an issue in Rainmaker mode, in which certain terrain wasn't appearing correctly on the turf map when inked.
  • Fixed an issue that caused players performing a Super Jump while swimming through ink to appear to be sliding long distances to opponents.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Ink Mines placed on enemy turf to occasionally be visible by opponents, whether or not they had the Bomb Sniffer gear ability.
  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

Released on June 8th, 2016.

  • Eight new weapons have been added and will now appear in the weapon shop.
    • Weapons will be available in the weapon shop after viewing the Inkopolis News on 6/8 from 11:00 AM (PT) onward.
  • Two new pieces of gear have also been added and will now appear in their respective shops.
  • Adjustments have been made to specifications for certain Main and Sub weapons, and gear abilities.
  • Arowana Mall: Adjustment made to prevent players from taking unintended shortcuts in all modes.
  • Bluefin Depot: Fixed an issue that allowed players to move inside certain objects in Rainmaker mode.
  • Camp Triggerfish: Adjusted the size of the “Don’t retreat!” warning zone near team starting areas.
  • Piranha Pit: Adjustment made to prevent players from taking unintended shortcuts in all modes.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed players to jump higher than intended when touching an opponent’s Splash Wall.
  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

Released on April 13th, 2016.

  • Eight new weapons have been added and will now appear in the weapon shop.
    • Weapons will be available in the weapon shop after viewing the Inkopolis News on 04/12/16.
  • Changed starting Splatfest Power level for players with S+ Rank.
  • Adjustments have been made to specifications for certain Main, Sub, and Special weapons. Additionally, adjustments have been made to weapons that mark or locate other players.
  • Saltspray Rig: Adjustment made to prevent players from taking unintended shortcuts in all modes.
  • Bluefin Depot: Fixed an issue that allowed players to move inside certain objects in Rainmaker mode.
  • Flounder Heights: Adjustment made to prevent players from taking unintended shortcuts in Tower Control mode.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed players holding the Rainmaker to super jump when the server connection was particularly poor.
  • Fixed an issue that occasionally prevented players from taking damage from Splash Walls if standing close enough to it when it was first activated.
  • Fixed an issue in which the explosion from Suction Bombs destroyed by a Splash Wall was still capable of passing through the Splash Wall to damage players.
  • Fixed an issue in which it was possible to splat opposing players with vertical Inkzooka or Rainmaker shots when they were completely concealed by solid terrain.
  • Fixed an issue in which Splash Shield strength was not being reduced when shot by an Inkzooka or Rainmaker.
  • Fixed an issue in which players on the far side of a Splash Wall could still be splatted if the wall was hit by a shot from the Rainmaker, depending on where the Splash Wall was hit.
  • Fixed an issue in which Ink Mines placed by multiple players at the same time would explode automatically, though they hadn’t been placed in the opposing ink color, triggered by an opposing player, or reached their time limit.
  • Fixed an issue in which Ink Mines placed by teammates could damage you depending on their placement.
  • Fixed issues in which players using the Kraken special weapon would not see a damage indicator (X mark) when attacking opponents directly, and not correctly followed by Seekers used by the opposing team.
  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

  • Arowana Mall - The map layout in Turf War is changed as follows:
    • The layout will be based on the stage layout in Splat Zones, but the grates that connect between the high platforms in each team's area will be removed.
  • Moray Towers - Changes to the layout in Turf War to match the layout in Splat Zones.
  • Until now, team assignments in Ranked Battle were completely random, but some consideration will now be given to equipped weapons when assigning teams.
  • Ranked Battle Matchmaking will be changed so that players of the following ranks are not matched together.
    • S+ and S
    • S and A+
    • A- and B+
    • B- and C+
    • This change may be subject to further adjustment depending on changes to matchmaking times that occur as a result.
  • During Ranked Battles, when a team plays at a disadvantage due to unavoidable issues such as teammates being disconnected, and then loses, the winning team’s points will be decreased by an amount proportional to the time they benefited from the above conditions.
  • Adjustments have been made to the efficacy of certain Gear Abilities.
  • During Splatfests what was previously the Vibe Meter will now display your Splatfest Power.
    • Initial Splatfest Power level depends upon your current Ranked Battle rank.
    • Splatfest Power level will change depending on wins or losses during Splatfest Battles.
    • The player with the highest Splatfest Power on the winning team will receive a slightly larger boost to their Splatfest Power than their teammates after the match.
  • Until now, Splatfest matchmaking favored grouping players with similar play styles. Players will now be more likely to play with those of similar Splatfest Power level.
  • The higher a team’s average Splatfest Power level, the more Splatfest Points they will earn after winning.

  • Walleye Warehouse: Adjustments will be made to object placement in Rainmaker Mode.
  • Arowana Mall: Adjustments will be made to prevent users from taking certain shortcuts in all modes.
  • Piranha Pit: Adjustments will be made to prevent users from taking certain shortcuts in Tower Control Mode.
  • Museum D’Alfonsino: Fix the issue in modes other than Tower Control in which the area around the central rotating platform was registering as being inked in unintended ways.
  • Mahi-Mahi Resort: Fix the issue In Rainmaker Mode in which breaking the Rainmaker barrier while in the central area caused the special gauge to fill more than intended.
  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

  • In Regular Battle and Splatfest, players of similar skill will be matched more often.
  • Added prohibited areas in Walleye Warehouse, Saltspray Rig, Arowana Mall, and Flounder Heights in Rainmaker mode. When players enter the prohibited area while carrying the Rainmaker, the amount of time they are allowed to hold the Rainmaker will decrease faster as a penalty.
  • Arowana Mall: Adjustments will be made to prevent users from taking certain shortcuts in all modes.
  • Port Mackerel: Adjustments will be made to prevent users from taking certain shortcuts in all modes.
  • Flounder Heights: Adjustments will be made to prevent users from taking certain shortcuts in all modes.
  • Museum D’Alfonsino: Adjustments will be made to prevent users from taking certain shortcuts in Rainmaker mode.
  • Fix the issue in Rainmaker mode in which the countdown moves more than usual when a player gets the Rainmaker in the air.
  • Fix the issue in Rainmaker mode in which the bombs’ blast waves inflict damage on the Rainmaker shield even when there are obstacles between the bomb and the shield.
  • Fix the issue in Rainmaker mode in which Splash Walls placed near each other by the same team take damage when one of them blocks an ink splat.
  • Fix the issue in which bombs that are thrown near a wall do not fly straight and makes contact with the wall.
  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

Released on November 12th, 2015.

  • New gear has been added, which will appear in the in-game shop at random.
  • Changed the display of the results screen in Ranked Battle. Players will be listed in the order of their winning percentages in the last 10 matches for the current mode (Wins - Losses).
    • Previously, players were listed in the order of the number of enemies they splatted. This adjustment was made since there are other ways to contribute to the team’s victory that cannot be measured in numerical terms.
    • The winning percentage will not be recorded in Regular Battle, Splatfest, Squad Battle, and Private Battle, so the results page will remain the same.
    • When the users' Ranks go up, the winning percentage will be reset.
  • Fixed the issue in which the blasts from Blaster weapons don't quite reach the opponent even though the direct hit marker (x) is displayed while taking aim.
  • Adjusted the amount of damage that rollers inflict when rolling over Splash Shields to match the amount of damage they inflict when rolling over opponents.
  • Adjustments were made in Tower Control so that Sprinklers placed on the towers break when they hit the ground (The Sprinklers previously only broke if they were placed on the ground and were hit by the towers).
  • Adjustments were also made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

  • Adjustments will be made to Main Weapons, Sub Weapons, and Special Weapons.
  • Adjustments will be made to the rules in Splat Zones and Tower Control modes.
    • Rank S users will be matched up with other rank S users more frequently, and rank S+ users will be matched up with other rank S+ users more frequently.
    • To accommodate this change, the calculation method for ranks S and S+ users will be adjusted.
  • Walleye Warehouse: Adjustments will be made to prevent users from taking certain shortcuts in Rainmaker Mode.
  • Saltspray Rig: Adjustments will be made to prevent users from placing Splash Walls in certain places.

  • The launching sound effect of the Inkzooka will be more audible.
  • Fixed the issue in which the ink refills slightly when beginning to charge an empty Splatling weapon.
  • Fixed the issue in which the Point Sensors and Disruptors do not function when there is significant lag in the connectivity.
  • Fixed the issue in which players are able to move the Tower even when they are not on the Tower by swimming in the area bordering the top and sides of the Tower.
  • Fixed the issue in which the Rainmaker shield does not take damage when the shield is extremely close to a wall.
  • Fixed the issue in which visual effects do not display when some of the ink hit the Rainmaker Barrier and Splash Walls.
  • Fixed the issue in which some ink splats occasionally go through thin walls.
  • Fixed the issue in which rollers occasionally inflict damage through thin walls.
  • Fixed the issue in which Kraken occasionally inflicts damage against opponents hiding on the other side of a thin wall.
  • Fixed the issue in which Shooter type main weapons shoot at a faster rate than usual when specific special weapons are activated.
  • Fixed the issue in which Splash Walls do not block opponents’ bombs and blasters.
  • Fixed the issue in which the damage stats for Splattershot Jr., Custom Splattershot Jr., N-ZAP '85, and N-ZAP '89 are displayed as higher than they actually are. This only changes the information displayed in the stats. The actual stats will remain the same.
  • Adjustments will also be made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

  • Arowana Mall: Adjustments to stage layout in all modes to prevent users from swimming over some of the ledges.
  • Camp Triggerfish: Adjustments to stage layout in Turf War and Splat Zones so users cannot jump directly over to the opponents' turf.
  • All Rollers: Adjusted the movement of the camera angle when users lift up the Roller back to the movement in Ver. 1.3.0.
  • Splash Wall: Fixed the issue in which users can sometimes inflict damage on their opponents by throwing a bomb while standing up against the opponent's Splash Wall.
  • Fixed the issue in which the teams' points are erroneously considered as tied when the numbers are extremely close to one another in Tower Control.
  • Changed the amount of points awarded to teams when the opposing team takes control of the tower after the player's team has not been able to take the lead when the points are tied.
  • In Ver. 2.0.0, the leading team's score goes down by 1 point, but this will revert back to the settings in Ver. 1.3.0 where the losing team's score goes up by 1 point.
  • Fix the issue in which the 104-2230 error occurs after downloading Ver. 2.0.0.

  • Users can create a squad with friends and battle against other squads in Ranked Battle.
    • Squad Battle can be accessed by players who are at level 10 or higher.
    • Once a squad is created, friends of friends will be able to join the squad.
    • Passwords can be set if users wish to only play with specific friends.
    • Squad Battle can only be played against other users who are playing Squad Battle. (Ranked Battle players will not be matched up with Squad Battle players.)
  • Users are able to create a Squad of 4, Squad of 3, or Squad of 2.
    • Squads of 3 may be matched up against Squads of 4.
    • When a Squad of 3 plays against a Squad of 4, the game will be set so the Squad of 3 respawns faster, but in general, the Squad of 3 will be at a disadvantage.
    • Squads of 2 will be matched up with three other Squads of 2, resulting in a match between "Squad of 2 x 2" vs "Squad of 2 x 2".
  • In Private Battle, friends can play in private, customizable matches.
    • Friends of friends are able to join.
    • Passwords can be set if users wish to only play with specific friends.
  • Users are able to level up to level 50.
    • This will be unlocked once players reach level 20 and go to the lobby.
  • Users are able to achieve rank S and S+.
    • Rank S and S+ can only be attained by playing Ranked Battle, not through Squad Battle.
    • Once users reach rank S and S+, the rank will no longer be affected by the results of Squad Battle.
  • Changed the calculation method for Rank Points based on the results in Ranked Battle.
  • Users will be sent back to the lobby when their ranks change in Ranked Battle.
  • New gear has been added, which will appear in the in-game shop at random.
  • New BGM has been added, which will play during battles at random.
  • During the results of Splatfest, the winning percentage will be multiplied by 4 rather than 2.
  • Urchin Underpass: Overall layout has been adjusted in all modes.
  • Saltspray Rig: Adjusted stage layout in Tower Control.

  • Tenacity: Adjustments will be made so the special gauge begins to fill up after the battle begins, rather than starting prior to the battle.
  • Special Charge Up: Adjustments will be made so the special gauge will fill up in amounts consistent with the amount of area inked.
  • Adjust the sound effects for Inkstrike so it can be heard when it is about to strike on the left, right, or back of the player.
  • Adjust the sound effects for some of the longer range weapons so it can be heard from far away when it hits.
  • Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

  • When there are more members on one team than the other and the match-making process takes too long, members from the same team will be able to battle each other.
    • Members will still receive Splatfest Points even when they battle against members of the same team.
    • Note: Only the results from matches against the opposing team will be included in the overall Splatfest results.
  • Adjustments have been made to allow some players at random to participate as early as 5 minutes prior to the official start time of Splatfest in order to make for a more pleasant gaming experience. (Note: All players will be able to participate once the event begins.)
    • This adjustment was made to lighten the server load at the beginning of the Splatfest.
  • Adjustments have been made to the number of Super Sea Snails distributed to members of the losing team that have earned either of the top two Splatfest rank titles.
  • Inkstrike: The amount of area covered is more consistent regardless of where it lands.
  • Kraken: The amount of knockback is increased when taking damage from an opponent while using Kraken.
  • Ninja Squid: Swim speed has been lowered when using this ability.
  • Stealth Jump: The amount of time it takes to Super Jump is longer when using this ability.
  • Ink Resistance Up: The effects with respect to the amount of damage and speed when moving through enemy ink have been adjusted.
