An Area Gate is a barrier in Octo Valley and Octo Canyon that blocks the player from advancing to the next area before all missions in the area are complete.
Description
Area Gates are a set of four thin pillars arranged in a square shape. Wires with lightbulbs attached to them are strung between the pillars. The wires are plugged into outlets attached to the Boss Kettle of each area, and an electric current passes through the wires when the mission is complete. As a result, the lightbulbs explode. destroying the wires and opening a passage to the next area.

- An exploit exists in Area 4 to skip the area and proceed to Area 5 by inking the right side of the platform under the Area Gate with a Burst Bomb and performing a very precise jump onto the inked part, then swimming and jumping onto the block leading to Area 5.
