This classically trained, all-female 6-piece band creates jazz and samba-inspired battle music. They owe their unique sound to a blend of academic music theory and modern sensibilities. Ink Theory’s eclectic approach makes them quite popular with young Inklings and middle-aged Inklings alike.

Ink Theory(NA/EU/OC)[a], or カレントリップ (Current Rip)(JP)[b], is a female six-piece jazz band. Their songs were added in the Splatoon 2's Version 2.0.0.

Members

  • Trumpet: Her Japanese name is "ヨーコ" (Yoko). She is the frontman of the band, though her relationship with the other members is hazy. She has a sister in high school. She is an Inkling with a mutation that lets her tentacles be different colors, though it does weaken her. Although she usually feels under the weather, regardless of if it's raining or sunny, she always gives a solid performance.
  • Piano: Her Japanese name is "カレン" (Karen). She graduated at the top of her class, allowing her to participate in overseas competitions and receive moral support from her bandmates. She provides a pleasant atmosphere for the rest of the band, but occasionally gets worried about lacking motivation. She formed Ink Theory after being amazed by the music of Hightide Era.
  • Kazoo: Her Japanese name is "ビビ" (Bibi). She generally gets the most attention of all the members of the band, occasionally sickened by how frequently she gets pulled out in front of cameras. She has never struggled very much financially.
  • Bass: Her Japanese name is "あーちん" (Aachin). She grew up in a strict household, being a fan of contemporary music, though eventually she grew to fall in love with classical styles as well. Although she is pretty, she has fallen in love with someone depraved.
  • Percussion: Her Japanese name is "マヤヤ" (Mayaya). She joined Ink Theory after graduating from her music academy. While her professor recommended she could become a music instructor herself, she decided she'd rather create her own music instead. While she primarily plays with Ink Theory, she occasionally freelances percussion for other bands.
  • Drums: Her Japanese name is "きたむら" (Kitamura). She is the band's mascot, and has a high singing voice. She has a calm personality, and lives by herself, paying close attention to her curfew.

Trivia

  • According to a Splatoon 2 Anniversary Famitsu interview with the developers, in-universe, Ink Theory was inspired by Hightide Era.[1]
    • This connection can be seen with the ties they wear, which are identical to the ones worn by Hightide Era, albeit in gold instead of red.
