Squid vs. Octopus was a Splatfest event in Splatoon 2. It was held worldwide. It was announced on 7 July 2018. The results were given on 22 July 2018.

Details

The Squid vs. Octopus Splatfest was unique in that the player character would change to match the team chosen; Team Squid played as Inklings and Team Octopus played as Octolings. Normally, players must complete the Octo Expansion in order to unlock playable Octolings, but this Splatfest allowed anyone to play as an Octoling as long as they chose Team Octopus. The character change took effect for the duration of each match. If the player switched to the other species, the gender, eye, and skin tone customizations would be kept, but the hairstyle is the default one for that species (e.g. Tentacurl for Octoling girls). The lifetime ink coverage tracked in SplatNet 2 counted the turf inked as the species the player appeared as during battle.

The Splatfest celebrates Splatoon 2's first anniversary with falling confetti appearing at the start of the match, and squid-shaped and octopus-shaped fireworks appearing in Shifty Station.

When the Squid vs. Octopus Splatfest was announced, Marina brought up the potential speciesism of it as "dangerous" and "confrontational". Pearl's response made it clear that, as of this Splatfest, she was still oblivious to the Octolings populating Inkopolis Square, believing them to be Inklings following a "hairstyle fad".

The full name of each choice was "I'm team SQUID!" and "I'm team OCTOPUS!". The team name portion of Splatfest titles was "Squid" and "Octopus".

Squid vs. Octopus featured the 12th Shifty Station layout, Sweet Valley Tentacles.

Trivia

• The logos on the Splatfest Tee resemble the Japanese word for squid and octopus, being 烏賊 (ika) and 蛸 (tako) respectively.
  • These logos were present in the game since release, appearing as graffiti on certain stages such as The Reef and Port Mackerel.
• This Splatfest shared its name with the Japanese Splatoon Splatfest Squid vs. Octopus. However, while the version in Splatoon 2 was about the animals themselves, the version in Splatoon was specifically about eating the meat of the animals.
• The cover sheet's note of "Thy appearance shall match thy team" is referencing the fact that all players could play as Octolings as long as they were on Team Octopus, unlike regular times where players could only play as Octolings as long as they finished the Octo Expansion.
