Splatoon features a variety of characters seen from the fan made to sixth issue. They range from being secondaries to commentators to fulfilling the plot of the issue. Most of the characters' current English names are only based on fan-translations. An official English translation has since been released by VIZ Media.

Protagonists

Blue Team

A group of supposedly idiotic Inklings who are the main protagonists of the manga. They don a blue ink color. This team consists of four members:

Goggles is quite naïve. In fact, it is mentioned in issue 4 that Goggles mixes toothpaste and wasabi. He sometimes never listens to anyone else except for Knit Cap, showing that she and Goggles have a very special bond.
A "topic" about Goggles from the squid profiles in the manga reads: "He can't hear his alarm clock very well, so he always leaves his house tired and disorientated. He also has a bad sleeping posture." It might mean that Goggles can't hear well, which is why he sometimes ignores people. Another topic states the lunch he brings to practice is usually pickled plums made by his grandmother.
In the first issue, he wore Pilot Goggles, a Zink Layered LS, and Purple Hi-Horses; and used the plain S Weapon Main Splattershot.png Splattershot[1].
His favorite food is Onigiri-zushi.
In the Splatoon 2 Manga, he now wears an Eggplant Mountain Coat and a pair of drawstring pants along with his goggles and Hero Runner Replicas since his clothes burned up upon super jumping to his team from the top of Deca Tower and crashing into the Crust Bucket
Glasses can be a very anxious squid, but tries to hide it as best as he can. He tries to flaunt his knowledge as much as he can, but sometimes he notices nobody is listening to him, which upsets him.
In the first issue, he wore Retro Specs, a Vintage Check Shirt, and White Kicks; and used the S Weapon Main Inkbrush.png Inkbrush[1].
Whilst acting as a big sister to the team despite them being the same age, Headphones is level-headed, except when Goggles is doing his usual idiotic things.
In the first issue, she wore Studio Headphones, a White Tee, and Pink Trainers; and used the S Weapon Main Splat Charger.png Splat Charger[1].
Knit Cap seems to enjoy Goggles' actions. Though she and her big smile show her innocence, Knit Cap is pretty much always happy in the face of danger.
In the first issue, she wore a Bobble Hat, a Green Zip Hoodie, and Cream Hi-Tops; and used the S Weapon Main Splat Roller.png Splat Roller[1].
  • According to the manga topics, they each bring their own lunch to practice.

Supporting

Yellow-Green Team

Trivia

  • Most squids are named by a piece of their gear, mostly headgear. The honorific -kun or -chan at the end of their names are added in Japanese.
    • Some of these squids, like Rider, are named after their clothing and other squids, like Cleats, are named after their shoes.
  • As shown in a CoroCoro video about Splatoon Volume 1, Sankichi drew the mascot, Goggles, in squid ink.
  • All teams in the Splatoon era of the manga consist of two male Inklings and two female Inklings, with the captain always being male, and the bios for each team, except Dark Green Team, list them in the order male-male-female-female.
