O.R.C.A.

From Inkipedia, the Splatoon wiki

Template:InfoboxCharacter O.R.C.A., also known as Omniscient Recording Computer of Alterna,[1] is a computer system in Return of the Mammalians in Splatoon 3. O.R.C.A. appears to be somewhere within Alterna, in the story mode of the game.[2]

Splatoon 3

O.R.C.A. is a archival-oriented digital information management system that was created by the scientists who built Alterna. Its purpose is to record and preserve the precious knowledge gathered by the surviving Alternan humans. It plays an important role in Return of the Mammalians: when Agent 3 enters their first kettle in Alterna, it is booted up and introduces itself. After explaining the mechanics of kettle missions, it begins collecting information on Agent 3, referring to them as a citizen of Alterna. Throughout the campaign it offers a brief explanation of each mission's goal and purpose, the entry cost and rewards of the stage to the player, as well as information on the weapons available for the player to select from. If Agent 3 fails to accomplish certain missions' special objectives (such as limited ink), O.R.C.A. will inform them of their failure and pour ink directly above them, splatting them.

Personality and traits

Unlike its fellow AI Commander Tartar, O.R.C.A. is almost never hostile towards the player, nor does it attempt to deceive them. Instead it is seemingly only interested in conducting tests and maintaining Alterna, only threating the player against sharing the information in the Alterna logs. Additionally, O.R.C.A. speaks in a deadpan manner, but is not entirely emotionless. Callie speculates that the AI has a sense of humor, and in the stage Amusing A Bemused Muse, the AI only responds with disappointed silence at the Squid Sisters' failure to recognize a box statue as an orca, the very same animal its name and icon are modeled after.

Alterna Logs

Main article: Alterna Logs

Alongside the Sunken Scrolls found in Alterna, O.R.C.A. also keeps the seven Alterna Logs. It is clear O.R.C.A is the one who recorded them, as certain logs are written in the first person.

Trivia

  • O.R.C.A. plays a similar role to that of C.Q. Cumber in the Octo Expansion: both explain the mechanics of each level in the opening area, provide the selection of weapons available for the level in the equipper, and splat the player if they fail a special condition.
  • If the player manages to enter a level other than Get to Know Alterna, Your Only Choice as their first level, O.R.C.A.'s introductory cutscene will play in that level's respective gate instead.[3]
  • When first booted up, O.R.C.A. makes a sound similar the sound of a printer starting up.
