Like all teams vying for the European championship, KaiZer consists of top European competitive players of one country or region, including ZerreZ (a former member of FreeZe and currently on Graveyard Shift, which competed in the InkTV Resurgence League the previous April) and Majin (a former member of BackSquids, the runner-up of the Splatoon 2 World Championship 2018). It began its campaign by qualifying for the German regional championship of the Splatoon 3 European Championship by winning the third qualifier on 2023-07-22, sweeping all five teams it faced. During the German regional championship, it swept Energie Kopfnuss 2-0 in the quarterfinal, defeated Black Lotus 3-1 in the semifinal, and outlasted Haarige Hinterländler in a competitve 3-2 final, becoming the German representative for the Splatoon 3 European Championship 2023.

Tournament format
Throughout the tournament, all weapons and gear were permitted, but only primary gear abilities (a.k.a. mains) – and no secondary gear abilities (a.k.a. subs) – were allowed.

Group stage
The six teams were placed in two groups, Group A and Group B, of three teams each. Each group was conducted round-robin style, in which every team competed against each of its two opponents in a match consisting of a best-of-three, all-Turf War series. Stages were selected at random from a pool of eight stages, and no stage was repeated within a match. The team that won the most matches in each group earned a bye to the Semifinal round of the Championship Bracket; tiebreakers were available if needed. Each team that finished second in its group was paired with a third place finisher of the other group in the Quarterfinal round.

Championship bracket
All six teams were placed in the single elimination bracket based on their placement within their respective groups. Each group winner received a bye to the semifinals, where they awaited the winner of a quarterfinal. The second place finisher of Group B was matched up against the third place finisher of Group A in Quarterfinal 1, while the second place finisher of Group A was paired with the third place finisher of Group B in Quarterfinal 2. In the semifinals, the Group A winner would play against the winner of Quarterfinal 1, while the Group B winner would face the winner of Quarterfinal 2. The winners of both semifinal matches would confront each other in the Final, from which the winner will be crowned world champions.

The Quarterfinal and Semifinal rounds consisted of best-of-five series, while the Final was a best-of-seven. Stages and modes for each game were preset.

The Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024 was a competitive tournament that was held from 13 April 2024 to 14 April 2024 involving the champions of six regional tournaments, with Jackpot from North America becoming the world champions. It was originally going to be held at Nintendo Live 2024 in Tokyo from 20 January 2024 to 21 January 2024, but was postponed due to Nintendo Live's cancellation.[1]

Teams

Each of the six participating teams qualified by winning the championship tournament of its respective region.

Japan Phantom Thief of the Heart

The newest champion of the Japan region, Phantom Thief of the Heart won the first day of the Kantō region district tournament held on 29 April 2023 to earn its spot in the national finals, which began on 30 March 2024 after over a three-month delay following the cancellation of Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo. There, it defeated Tokai region Day 2 winner BangColorBabyZ 2–1 in Top Eight before sweeping both Kinki region Day 1 winner Tear Rain (2–0) and Hokkaido Day 1 winner Sakurarush (3–0) to be crowned Japan region champions and earn its spot in the World Championship.[7][8]

USA Jackpot

A rising force in the western competitive Splatoon scene since its genesis, Jackpot has been on a meteoric ascent. It won the InkTV Resurgence League in May in dominating fashion, defeating its fellow Western giants Crush Soda, Starburst, and Alliance Rogue while losing only two games. Suddenly touted as the best of the West, it was also selected as one of four Western teams to qualify for the Splat World Championship.[9] It would continue its dominant streak over Western competition by winning its first fourteen consecutive matches and 30 out of 31 games in the first of two qualifier events of the Splatoon 3 Championship 2023, North America's championship tournament. Even after losing to Starburst 3–2 in the Winners Final and dropping down to the Losers Bracket, Jackpot would defeat Duck Gang 3–1 in the Losers Semifinal and Last Resort in the Losers Final to punch its ticket to the Splatoon 3 Championship 2023.[10][11]

After qualifying, Jackpot remained very busy in the competitive scene, getting second in Splatamax #2[12] and third in Area Cup #2[13] and winning In The Zone 29,[14] Mode Cup #3,[15] Mode Cup: Clam Blitz Edition,[16] and Golden Squid Junction.[17] It also reached the Top 4 in the Summer 2023 edition of the Splat World Championship.[18][19] The extra competitive participation paid off, as Jackpot would sweep Duck Gang 3–0 and defeat Crush Soda 4–2 to win the Splatoon 3 Championship 2023 to punch its ticket to Tokyo.[20][21]

Germany KaiZer

Like all teams vying for the European championship, KaiZer consists of top European competitive players of one country or region, including ZerraZ (a former member of FreeZe and last seen on Graveyard Shift, which competed in the InkTV Resurgence League the previous April) and Majin (a former member of BackSquids, the runner-up of the Splatoon 2 World Championship 2018). It began its campaign by qualifying for the German regional championship of the Splatoon 3 European Championship by winning the third qualifier on 22 July 2023, sweeping all five teams it faced. During the German regional championship, it swept Energie Kopfnuss 2–0 in the quarterfinal, defeated Black Lotus 3–1 in the semifinal, and outlasted Haarige Hinterländler in a competitve 3–2 final, becoming the German representative for the Splatoon 3 European Championship 2023.[22]

In the European Championship, KaiZer dominated its three-team group by sweeping both Poland Hydrovsky and Spain Zenith 3-0, earning a spot in the semifinal round against defending European champion France Alliance Rogue. After losing the best-of-three Turf War series 2–0 (which counted as one win in the best-of-five semifinal series), KaiZer would win three of the next four (including a come-from-behind, overtime Game 5 win) to win the series 3–2 and advance to the final against Switzerland Golden Ratio. Once again, KaiZer would lose the Turf War series – this time 2–1 – but would win the next four games to win the best-of-seven series 4–1 and earn its trip to Tokyo as the European representative for the World Championship.[23][24]

Australia Greasy Goblins

Headlined by two-time Australia/New Zealand champion Latias (previously on Blue Ringed Octolings and Yeah Nah), Greasy Goblins entered the first qualifiers for the Splatoon 3 AU/NZ Championship on 18 August 2023 and defeated their first four opponents with relative ease. They finally faced some resistance against Great Question before winning 3–1, then they swept surveycake 3–0 to earn one of two spots in the Grand Final at PAX Australia 2023 in Melbourne on 8 October 2023.[26] There, they faced Solstice, which featured three members of the 2019 Australia/New Zealand champion Lime Soda: Geo, Jack and ShockWavee. Greasy Goblins lost the best-of-three Turf War series 2–0 (which counted as one win in the best-of-five Grand Final) but rebounded to win two consecutive Anarchy Battles to go up 2–1. However, Solstice won Game 4 to force a deciding Game 5, in which Greasy Goblins won to claim its spot in the World Championship.[27][28]

South Korea Shy Eel Rice Bowl Parade

Shy Eel Rice Bowl Parade (Korean: 수줍은 장어덮밥의 행진; RR: Sujub-eun Jangeodeopbab-ui Haengjin), referred to as Unadon (Japanese: 鰻丼, translation of 장어덮밥 or Eel Rice Bowl) during both the Japanese and North American Nintendo livestreams, entered the Southern Regional Preliminary of the Splatoon 3 Korean Championship on 24 November 2023. In a field of 29 participating teams, it emerged victorious in the all-Turf War tournament after defeating its first three opponents in single-game matches and sweeping its semifinal and final opponents 2–0 and 3–0 respectively.[29] As a top-four finisher, Shy Eel Rice Bowl Parade also earned a berth in the Splatoon Korean Championship 2023 at Nintendo Live 2023 in Seoul on 9 December 2023, where eight teams competed to become the first South Korean representative in a Nintendo-sponsored tournament. There, it swept its competition (1–0, 2–0, and 3–0) to be crowned the first South Korean Splatoon 3 champions and earn a trip to Tokyo to compete in the World Championship.[30]

Tournament format

Throughout the tournament, all weapons and gear were permitted, but only primary gear abilities (a.k.a. mains) – and no secondary gear abilities (a.k.a. subs) – were allowed.[2]

Each team that finished second in its group was paired with a third place finisher of the other group in the Quarterfinal round.[2]

Stage pool

Stages and modes for each game were preset.[3]
