An Octoling swinging an Octobrush, one of the main weapons included in the Brush class.

Brushes are one of the main weapon classes, introduced as an independent weapon class in Splatoon 3. In the previous titles of the Splatoon series, Brushes were part of the Roller class, with which they share some technical characteristics. Brushes have two attack modes: by pressing repeatedly ZR, the player will make their brush-type weapon swing and sprinkle ink globes that will spread forwards turfing the floor; by holding ZR and moving, the player will instead push the brush on the ground, similarly to a roller, but much faster and covering less floor. While the first attack mode is better to ink the stage and splat the opponents, the latter is more useful to run away from enemies or run around them to confuse and easily splat them.

Inkbrush
A fast but short-ranged brush. When pushed along the ground, the user moves at extremely high speed, and leaves behind a narrow trail of ink. Damage is low, as the user needs to land four globs of ink to splat an opponent. Inkbrush Template:Ya Template:Ya Template:Ya

Octobrush
A slower brush with decent range. Movement speed while pushing it along the ground is a bit slower compared to the Inkbrush. Only three hits are needed to splat an opponent. Octobrush Template:Ya Template:Ya Template:Ya

Splatoon

Victory:

  • Both genders sway their weapon side to side a few times before posing while resting the weapon on their shoulder.

Defeat:

  • Both genders rest their weapon on their shoulder while shaking their head in disappointment.

Splatoon 2

Spawning in before a match starts:

  • Both Inklings and Octolings hold their weapon over their shoulder.

Victory:

  • Inkling Girl: Does a few stretches while holding her weapon before positioning it behind her back.
  • Inkling Boy: Does a "pop-off" while resting his weapon on his shoulder before striking a pose.
  • Octoling Girl: Raises her weapon off the ground to rest it on her shoulder before wiping her forehead and striking a pose.
  • Octoling Boy: Similar to the Octoling Girl's, but instead ends with pointing his thumb towards his chest.

Defeat:

  • Both Inkling genders hold their weapon on the ground while holding their head in disappointment, while pausing to shake their head.
  • Octoling Girl: Holds her hand up to her face, falls forward and shakes her head, before looking up while winking.
  • Octoling Boy: Shakes his fist, kneels down and shakes his head, before looking up and winking.

In Ammo Knights (Clicking R stick):

  • Inklings: Raises their weapon up and down while looking it over, puts roller on the ground as if to start rolling, before returning to idle position.
  • Octolings: Holds their roller out in front of them and bounces it twice, looks weapon over from behind, raises the weapon up and brings it down into a crouched position before returning to idle.

Splatoon 3

Spawner Drone pose:

  • All styles: Jumps from the Spawner, swings the brush and then holds it in a ready-to-battle pose.

Victory (Emote: Flip Out)

  • All styles: Acrobatically swings the brush alternately using their hands, then holds it in a ready-to-battle pose.

Quotes

Squid Research Lab here, ready to brush up on brushes! Hold while using a brush to sprint at a tremendous speed and lay down a tactical ribbon of ink. You can also use rapid-fire brush swings to turn an opponent's face into the kind of abstract art that's worth millions!

Trivia

  • There are no brushes with Point Sensor, Toxic Mist, Fizzy Bomb, or Disruptor as their sub weapon.
  • Brushes are not affected by Run Speed Up while pushing them on the ground.
    • However, Brush users are affected by the ability while running, flicking or doing both things.
  • The Octobrush and Inkbrush series (except for the Inkbrush Nouveau) are the only brush-class weapons that have not been nerfed as of April 2020.
  • Against Salmonid, Inkbrushes have more DPS (Damage Per Second) when running with the brush on the ground while Octobrushes have more DPS when ink-flinging.
