Past vs. Present vs. Future, also known as Grand Festival, is an upcoming special Splatfest event in Splatoon 3. It was announced via a teaser trailer on social networks on 19 July 2024. It will be held for 72 hours from 13 September 2024 to 16 September 2024.[1] The Sneak Peek began on 1 September 2024, lasting for twelve days rather than the usual seven.[2]
Release history
Prior to the event's announcement, a short teaser clip of a jellyfish holding merch for the three idol groups in an area resembling the tutorial area was shown at the end of the Sizzle Season 2024 trailer, hinting at Grand Festival.
In an article published in the Summer 2024 edition of Nintendo Magazine called Interview: The Great Big Three-Group Summit!, the three idol groups expressed interest in collaborating as a supergroup.
Grand Festival was announced on 19 July 2024 via a teaser trailer featuring footage of the event in-game. Showcasing the new festival grounds, a heavy emphasis is put on the presence of all three idol groups' headlining of the event.
This trailer features a dramatic electropop music track that samples the Squid Sisters' Calamari Inkantation, Off the Hook's Color Pulse, and Deep Cut's Anarchy Rainbow; these three samples are synced with the individual reveals of the three idol groups performing during the event. This is followed by a section using the main melody of Three Wishes as the Now or Never Seven perform together. The trailer music ends with the melody from the instrumental segment of Calamari Inkantation.
Several promotional tweets revealing new information regarding Grand Festival were presented as undercover[3] reports done by Deep Cut dressed as journalists as they investigated the new festival grounds.[4]
On 13 August 2024, a Japanese website promoting Grand Festival was released.
On 26 August 2024, a new song performed by all three idol groups as the Now or Never Seven called Three Wishes was released.
Details
Described as the "crescendo"[5] or "grand finale"[6] of Splatoon 3's Splatfests, this is a special Splatfest event that commemorates the second anniversary of Splatoon 3.
The event will take place in a new area[7] known as the Grand Festival venue, resembling where the tutorial takes place, with the upside-down Eiffel Tower-like structure visible in the background. The Squid Sisters, Off the Hook, and Deep Cut perform on three stages:[8] the Giant Clam Stage, located at the back of the venue, the indoor Seashell Stage, located behind the photo spot, and the Urchin Stage, facing the venue's plaza.[9] Rather than gaining the ability to board the Splatfest Floats upon winning a 100× or 333× battle, all players who have achieved the Ruler Splatfest Rank or higher will be able to board the stage where Deep Cut will be performing.[10] Players that own the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass will additionally be able to board the stages where the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook will be performing.[11]
During the Splatfest, the amiibo box and the Tableturf Battle Dojo will be unavailable, and players will be unable to travel to Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza, and Inkopolis Square.[12]
10x Battles and Conch Clashes will occur twice as often as usual during the Grand Festival.[13]
A Big Run will occur on 7 September 2024, a week before the Grand Festival, at the Grand Splatlands Bowl, the location of the Grand Festival.[14]
A special news article in the Nintendo Switch news app will reward players with new thus-unknown Grand Festival-themed gear.
Instead of each team being represented by a member of Deep Cut like in other Splatfests in Splatoon 3, the teams are each represented by a different idol group: the Squid Sisters represent Team Past, Off the Hook represents Team Present, and Deep Cut represents Team Future.
During the first part of the event, the idols wear their usual costumes as they rotate between each one of the three stages, whilst rotating through a set schedule of five songs per group. During the second part, all idols perform "Three Wishes" together on the Giant Clam Stage whilst wearing new costumes, primarily white and chrome-colored, and (besides Big Man) paired with iridescent tentacle tips.
- Callie wears a white, short, sleeveless turtleneck onesie with two loops of small chrome plates surrounding her neck, a beige frilly skirt above and white opera gloves. She wears long spikes in the knot of her tentacles, and beige trekking ankle boots with gray laces and soles.
- Marie wears an onesie with a beige skirt on top that matches Callie's, but with long beige sleeves and an off-the-shoulder neckline with chrome plates surrounding it. She has an all-white crown similar to the test of an urchin in place of her usual hat, boots similar to Callie's, and a black ring on the middle finger of her left hand.
- Pearl wears a white peaked cap with silver studs around it and a metal Off the Hook logo at the center atop an oval black plate, a white crop top with a harness on top of a mesh T-shirt, white puffy shorts, and matching combat boots with three buckled beige strips on the sides.
- Marina wears a white plunge bikini top, a multi-tiered chrome necklace with round pendants hanging from a bronze choker, partially unbuttoned white pants with crossed laces on the bare sides, and tall white laced boots. Lacking her usual headphones, she wears multiple piercings in her ears, with a small, teal round one on the front and several purple spikes behind. Her fingertips have a gradient to white, matching Shiver and Frye's.
- Shiver wears a white crossed crop top, silver serpentine bracelets on both arms, and long chrome bell-bottoms; she also wears a dark, curved horn-shaped ornament on the right side of her head and a dull red Deep Cut logo tattoo on the right side of her midriff. Her eyebrows and tentacles are colored white, with the front one seeming to cover less of her left eye than usual.
- Frye wears a white long-sleeved bolero, a chrome strapless crop top, matching shorts with a thin strip circling each of her hips, and white laceless calf-length boots reminiscent of Order Boot Replicas. Her tentacles have a shorter side bang and are tied up in triangular buns, resembling imp horns, with a holographic X-shaped band; she also wears the same type of band on her left ear.
- Big Man wears white suspenders with large spikes and a black leather underside, white bandages around his tail, and a white flared headpiece reminiscent of a mohawk or a sailfish fin. He additionally has three tips of makeup under his left eye, and a tribal-style pattern on his fins.

Over the course of the Splatfest, the three idol groups will perform many songs from their individual discographies live upon the various stages available on the festival grounds. The set list schedule was revealed on 26 August 2024.[8]

- Shiver: Which is the most important to you?! Past vs. present vs. future! (Wait)
- Frye: This is the big one! Get hype! (Happy)
- Shiver: What she means, of course, is that this Splatfest is the Grand Festival. (Point)
- Big Man: Ay! Ay. (Yeah! It'll run for 72 hours at a special venue in the Crater.) (Point)
- Shiver: Well. The venue isn't the only special treat. Each team, Past, Present, and Future— (Special)
- Frye: EACH TEAM HAS ITS OWN POP-IDOL BACKUP! The Squid Sisters, Off the Hook, and us! (Attention)
- Big Man: Ay! Ay. (That's right! We even have a few messages of support from the others.) (Talk)
- Shiver: And since they couldn't join us today—so sad about that—I'll go ahead and read— (Talk Smirk)
- Callie: Wait up!
- Frye: Yo! Whaaat?! (SurprisedA)
- Callie: All you Anarchy Splatcast listeners better hold on to your tentacles...
- Marie: It's Squid Sisters time!
- Callie: We're here to rock the Grand Festival as supporters for Team Past, baby!
- Marie: Stay fresh!
- Shiver: Wait, why are you here on the air with us? No one told me about this! (SurprisedB)
- Marie: The four of us thought it would be fun to surprise Deep Cut. SURPRISE!
- Frye: The... four of you? (Angry)
- Big Man: Ay... (Wait, do you mean...) (Angry)
- Pearl: You already know who it is!
- Frye: That voice! It's... (SurprisedA)
- Pearl: Y'all feelin' fresh out there?
- Marina: It's Off the Hook, coming to you LIVE from Inkopolis Square!
- Pearl: We're here to make some noise for Team Present!
- Marina: You know what they say—it's now or never!
- Shiver: One might have considered informing the ACTUAL HOSTS of the Anarchy Splatcast... (Angry)
- Marina: Good thing you love surprises, then!
- Shiver: Well, it might be obvious, but since Team Future isn't spoken for... (Special)
- Frye: WE'VE GOT YOU, TEAM FUTURE! Deep Cut will be the ink beneath your wings. (Greeting)
- Big Man: Ay? (Can you imagine the Squid Sisters or Off the Hook backing you? So dreamy...) (SurprisedB)
- Frye: HEY! They're kind of our rivals, Big Man. You need to unjoin their fan clubs!
- Shiver: AHEM. If ANYone would let me finish a sentence, we're ALL here to provide... (point)
- Big Man: Ay! Ay! (The absolute best support ever! Let's all make this Splatfest super epic!) (Happy)
- Callie: The past, present, and future are all so important... It's a tough choice!
- Marie: It sure is...
- Marie: But without all the stuff that happened in the past, we wouldn't be who we are now.
- Callie: You're right! Our shared memories are our greatest treasures!
- Pearl: Yeah, well, what has the past done for me lately? It's all about the here and now!
- Marina: Tell 'em, Pearl!
- Pearl: Get all you can out of the present, and the future will take care of itself. That's real!
- Marina: I can take or leave my past. But my present with Off the Hook means so much to me!
- Frye: Whatever. I'm pumped about tomorrow! Future's so bright I gotta wear shades! (Fighting)
- Big Man: Ay. Ay! (It's true—you can't go anywhere without looking forward. The future rules!) (Angry)
- Shiver: Well. It sounds like we all have enthusiasm and a well-thought-out rationale... (Talk Smirk)
- Callie: In it to win it!
- Shiver: Listen up! It's going down... The idol reps for the Grand Festival are... (Greeting)
- Callie: Can't get ahead without knowing where ya came from!
- Marie: We've got your back, Team Past!
- Pearl: History was just setting the stage for now.
- Marina: I'm on Team Present to make this moment the best it can be. Join us if you agree!
- Frye: Always move forward! Keep grinding! Stay tough! Forever be never quitting! (Greeting)
- Big Man: Ay. Ay. Ay! (What she said... sort of. Ink boldly into the beyond. Team Future!) (Happy)
- Note: Shiver performs her Fighting animation during Big Man's line.

Trivia
- This Splatfest was announced during the five-year anniversary of Splatoon 2's Final Fest, Chaos vs. Order.
- This is the first Splatfest in Splatoon 3 to be held for 72 hours, rather than the usual 48.
- The first and third options of this Splatfest use the same English names as the options in Past vs. Future, a North American Splatfest in Splatoon (albeit with a different question). However, the names are different in French and Spanish, as Past vs. Future was known as "Dinosaurs vs. Robots" in these languages.
- This is the fourth Splatfest in Splatoon 3 to feature plain-colored Splatfest Tees instead of tie-dye ones, with the others being Grass vs. Fire vs. Water, Power vs. Wisdom vs. Courage, and Lightly Salted vs. Consommé vs. Salted Seaweed.
- Of these Splatfests, this is the only one to not be a collaboration with a real-life brand.
- Liquid Sunshine is the only song performed during the first part of the Splatfest to not have been previously performed in neither a live concert nor in any of the hub areas during prior Splatfests across all three games.
