Smeared Canvas is a song performed by Deep Cut.

Description

Smeared Canvas is an energetic pop song. The song starts with an instrumental intro, then a verse sung by both Shiver and Frye. This first verse samples the melody of Treasure Obtained. The second verse is two solo parts, first by Frye, followed by Shiver. The first verse is then repeated. Afterwards, a bridge is played featuring Frye's vocals before looping back to the intro.

This song is played during two missions in Alterna Space Center of the Return of the Mammalians single player campaign in Splatoon 3, first during The Spirit Lifter: Steerage, then immediately followed by The Spirit Lifter: First Class. Although the song is played continuously throughout these two missions, different percussion instruments are used between them, with the transition to the different instrumental happening after the player lands onto the latter mission.

Like in many other missions, when the player has been spotted by enemies, an additional percussion track is layered on top of the music.

In Splatune 3, the track contains two loops of the version played in The Spirit Lifter: Steerage, then switches to the version played in The Spirit Lifter: First Class. The music starts fading out near the end of the second loop, but stops to maintain the volume when switching to the First Class version, then resumes fading out about 30 seconds later.

The vocals use mostly the same melody as the Treasure Obtained jingle.

Lyrics

The booklet included with Splatune 3 gives the official lyrics for Smeared Canvas.[1] The lyrics are nonsensical; the Japanese hiragana and katakana simply give the pronunciation.

Other versions

Smeared Canvas (Live)

During the Splatoon 3 Live Concert featuring Deep Cut at Nintendo Live 2024 TOKYO, an extended version of Smeared Canvas is used. In this version the percussion line follows the version used in The Spirit Lifter: Steerage.

Smeared Canvas (Grand Festival Stage)

This article or section is a stub.
You can help the wiki by adding to it.

During days one and two of Past vs. Present vs. Future Splatfest, an extended version of Smeared Canvas plays, based on the live version.

Smeared Canvas (Grand Festival Battle)

During days two and three of Past vs. Present vs. Future Splatfest, an alternate version of Smeared Canvas plays. This version lacks the intro of the original version and, like the live version, features Big Man's vocals during the chorus. Additionally, this version features the solo from the live version as the members of Deep Cut hum along. While this solo is played by a guiter in the live version, it is played by a synth in this version, which sounds similar to Treasure Obtained.[3]
