souv3nir is a song performed by Free Association in Side Order. It is played on floors 21F to 29F during "Sink the ∞-ball(s)!" missions.
Description
souv3nir is distinct from its lower-floor counterparts, being much quicker and more chaotic. It contains many more instruments that play together as opposed to the discrete turn-taking of the previous songs. The music opens with the series' staple sounds; harsh, discordant synth pangs with a loud, somber melody on top, made further unnerving by the disharmonic chords below. The song then becomes even more chaotic, with sharper synth hits, building up to an anticlimactic keyboard interlude. The song then switches tone completely to a vocal synth playing the main melody of the "Sink the ∞-ball(s)!" series of songs, this time with matching chords below. Near the end, the two emotional themes of the song begin to clash, with unsettling arpeggios lining the melancholic motif. Eventually, the vocals give way to the chaos just before the song loops.
Etymology
The name souv3nir is formed by replacing the letter "e" in "souvenir" with the number "3". Souvenir refers to an object or trinket considered to be a memento, ultimately derived from the French souvenir, meaning "to remember". As this song plays in ∞-ball-escorting floors, the song's title is likely a nod to the Octo Expansion's own 8-ball stations, referring to the ball escort mission objective as a "souvenir" from the Deepsea Metro. The naming scheme of replacing one letter of a word with the number 1, 2, or 3 is present in all floor songs for Side Order and derives from leetspeak.
