Turf Map
InfoboxGobbler
In battles, the map known as the Turf Map shows a comprehensive, top-down view of the current stage. It is constantly updated to show every splatter of ink and the locations of all teammates, represented by small icons. When an enemy accumulates a certain amount of damage or is marked using a weapon or ability, their icon can also be seen on the map temporarily. Players can also select certain key locations on the map (such as active teammates or the spawn point) in order to Super Jump to them.

The Turf Map is visible at all times during battles on GP, and all selections related to Super Jumps (as well as the targeting for the Inkstrike) are performed using the touchscreen. The Pearl Drone is a form Pearl can change into within the Memverse in SO.

Additionally, the Recon ability provides extra detail on opponents while a player stands on their spawn point.
Appearance
The Pearl Drone is a small, pale pink flying robot with a round shape and a white crown with pink spikes on top. Her eyes are rendered as a black LCD screen in the shape of an Inkling eye mask, with two white cross shapes representing her pupils. Above them are two pale yellow sliders, functioning as eyebrows. The Pearl Drone also has a small hole below her right eye, representing Pearl's beauty mark, and two appendages on the sides that each have a pink gradient and a sucker-like white circle below, resembling tentacles. On the bottom are blades attached to a black opening.

While not strictly a Turf Map, OV features a stripped-down map showing a general overview of stages during missions; less detail is visible, but keys are shown on the map and enemies are not hidden as in battles but instead appear as white dots.
History
Before Side Order
The drone form was created by Marina while finalizing the concept of the Memverse. Seeking a variety of operators to facilitate smooth performance of the Memverse's memory restoration module, including one responsible for user guidance, she eventually decided on giving this role to Pearl.

Splatoon 2
Judging by Marina's Dev Diaries, Pearl seems to have been unaware or unable to completely understand what her intended role within the Memverse was to be, but Marina waves this ignorance off, stating that Pearl is "usually down for whatever". On the eve of the first proper test of the Memverse, Pearl was set to enter the Memverse the next day alongside Eight and Marina.

Starting in S2, due to the shift in platform to the Nintendo Switch, the Turf Map instead is no longer constantly displayed and must be manually called or dismissed with a press of X. Additionally, due to the lack of touchscreen access during docked play, it is no longer used for gameplay whatsoever, and instead a cursor controlled with RS or the gyro sensor is used to select Super Jump targets with A. Alternatively, the player may use the different DPad directions to select targets, with D-Pad Down always being assigned to the team spawn point and the other three directions each being assigned to a teammate. However, selecting Squid Beakons must be done manually using the cursor, as there are not enough D-Pad directions to account for them.

The Turf Map also gains some extra detail previously unavailable (or previously regulated to the now-defunct Recon ability): in addition to being able to view a list of teammates and their weapons, their main slot gear abilities are also now visible. The same also applies for opponents, who are listed sans names in a window in the upper-right of the Turf Map overlay.
Side Order
Upon being forcibly pulled into the Memverse by Order, Pearl awakens to find herself trapped as a drone, unsure of the reason for her change in form or the nature of her whereabouts. After waking the nearby unconscious Eight, the two enter the Spire of Order, meet Acht, and perform the "first climb". After helping to combat Marina Agitando in the Control Room and being ejected from the Spire by Order alongside her, Eight, and Acht, the freed Marina manipulates the underpinnings of the Memverse enough to allow Pearl to transition from drone to Inkling form and vice versa at will. After this point, Pearl continues to accompany Eight on their forays up the Spire, voluntarily remaining mainly in drone form.

Abilities
Additionally, Squid Beakons gained a major new attribute as of the version 4.2.0 update, namely the ability to be used one additional time if used by a teammate who does not also have the Squid Beakon. The "charges" available to a Beakon as a result of this change are displayed as two dots above each Beakon's icon on the map.
Similar to Smallfry in RotM, Pearl acts as a companion for Agent 8. Unlike Smallfry, she acts independently, by attacking enemies alongside the player. She can also point out enemies with a pink laser, which does no damage. She can be upgraded by placing color chips inside a Palette, enhancing her abilities or adding sub or special weapons to her arsenal, such as Splat Bombs or individual Killer Wail 5.1 speakers, all of which have to be charged before use. The needed points for charge can be decreased with multiple color chips. A color chip also exists that unlocks drone batteries, which must appear as drops from enemies. Picking up a drone battery automatically gives all gauges 100 points. She is also able to carry the player like a glider. This happens when they are in the air in Octoling form for some time, or by pressing and holding B after jumping. If three Disc Pieces are collected, she will perform the Step-Off Song, creating a pink haze around the player's screen, which knocks back nearby Jelletons, stuns bosses, and disables portals or gushers for a limited time.

SR has no form of Turf Map. Grizzco's Employee Handbook explains that this is the result of a mysterious magnetic field in the restricted zone hampering the sensory organs of Inklings and Octolings, leaving them unable to perform Super Jumps freely and forcing them to verify their surroundings with eyesight alone.
The abilities of the Pearl drone can be upgraded with color chips and the drone chip selection can expanded with Marina's Hacks, which are unlockable by exchanging Prlz with Marina in the Order Sector. There is a Danger effect, known as "No Drone", in which the player is not allowed to use the Pearl Drone during the level.

In a break from Splatoon, OC missions (as well as OE stations) have no form of map whatsoever. Unlike with Salmon Run, there is no in-universe explanation for their absence.

The vast majority of map mechanics in Splatoon 2 continue to apply in S3. Some differences and new additions include:
!Marina's Hacks

|-
* A slight modification to the detail provided on enemies and allies by the Turf Map: in addition to the main weapons in use by other players, the sets of those weapons are now also shown.
|More action slots
* The elimination of fixed spawn points; despite their absence, it is still possible to Super Jump to a set location of one's spawn area, meaning the functionality is almost entirely unchanged.
|The Pearl Drone has one action slot by default, which can hold one ability. The number of abilities can be expanded to a total of five.
* The introduction of the Big Bubbler, a special weapon which creates a large temporary barrier with a Super Jump spot in its center. Much as with Squid Beakons, enemy Big Bubblers are also visible on the map.
!
* Although Return of the Mammalians still lacks maps for each individual mission, the maps of each site are slightly more mechanically in-depth than in previous games, being able to be surveyed to gain rewards.

The Pearl Drone is a form Pearl can change into within the Memverse in Side Order.

History

Before Side Order

The eighth entry of Marina's Dev Diaries depicting the creation of the Pearl Drone.

The drone form was created by Marina while finalizing the concept of the Memverse. Seeking a variety of operators to facilitate smooth performance of the Memverse's memory restoration module, including one responsible for user guidance, she eventually decided on giving this role to Pearl.

Abilities

Similar to Smallfry in Return of the Mammalians, Pearl acts as a companion for Agent 8. This happens when they are in the air in Octoling form for some time, or by pressing and holding after jumping. If three Disc Pieces are collected, she will perform the Step-Off Song, creating a pink haze around the player's screen, which knocks back nearby Jelletons, stuns bosses, and disables portals or gushers for a limited time.
