Past vs. Present vs. Future, also known as Grand Festival, was a special Splatfest event in Splatoon 3. It was announced via a teaser trailer on social networks on 19 July 2024. It was held for 72 hours from 13 September 2024 to 16 September 2024. The Sneak Peek began on 1 September 2024, and lasted for twelve days rather than the usual seven.

The event took place in a new hub area called the Grand Festival Grounds, a festival venue built for this Splatfest near the Crater.

Release history

Prior to the event's announcement, a short teaser clip of a jellyfish holding merch for the three idol groups in an area resembling the tutorial area was shown at the end of the Sizzle Season 2024 trailer, hinting at Grand Festival.

In an article published in the Summer 2024 edition of Nintendo Magazine called Interview: The Great Big Three-Group Summit!, the three idol groups expressed interest in collaborating as a supergroup and came up with the name for the Now or Never Seven.

Grand Festival was announced on 19 July 2024 via a teaser trailer featuring footage of the event in-game. Showcasing the new festival grounds, a heavy emphasis is put on the presence of all three idol groups' headlining of the event.

This trailer features a dramatic electropop music track that samples the Squid Sisters' Calamari Inkantation, Off the Hook's Color Pulse, and Deep Cut's Anarchy Rainbow; these three samples are synced with the individual reveals of the three idol groups performing during the event. This is followed by a section using the main melody of Three Wishes as the Now or Never Seven perform together. The trailer music ends with the melody from the instrumental segment of Calamari Inkantation.

Several promotional tweets revealing new information regarding Grand Festival were presented as undercover reports done by Deep Cut dressed as journalists as they investigated the new festival grounds.

On 13 August 2024, a Japanese website promoting Grand Festival was released.

On 26 August 2024, a new song performed by all three idol groups as the Now or Never Seven called Three Wishes was released.

On 2 September 2024, a "power-cheering kit" generator was added to the Japanese website. Exclusively for mobile devices, players may create custom Grand Festival-themed graphics intended to be shared on social media to support their chosen team.

Details

Described as the "crescendo" or "grand finale" of Splatoon 3's Splatfests, this special Splatfest event commemorated the second anniversary of Splatoon 3.

The event took place at a special venue near the Crater called the Grand Festival Grounds, resembling where the tutorial takes place, with the upside-down Eiffel Tower-like structure visible in the background. The Squid Sisters, Off the Hook, and Deep Cut performed on three stages: the Giant Clam Stage, located at the back of the venue, the indoor Seashell Stage, located behind the photo spot, and the Urchin Stage, facing the venue's plaza.

As all three idol groups were present for the Grand Festival as the Now or Never Seven, the Squid Sisters represented Team Past, Off the Hook represented Team Present, and Deep Cut represented Team Future.

Rather than gaining the ability to board the Splatfest Floats upon winning a 100× or 333× battle, all players who achieved the Ruler Splatfest Rank or higher were able to board the Giant Clam stage. Additional poses were unlocked when reaching ranks higher than Ruler. Players that own the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass were additionally able to use Squid Sisters and Off the Hook poses.

During the Splatfest, the amiibo box and the Tableturf Battle Dojo were unavailable, and players were unable to travel to Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza, and Inkopolis Square.

10x Battles and Conch Clashes occurred twice as often as usual during the Grand Festival.

A Big Run took place on 7 September 2024, a week before the Grand Festival, at the Grand Splatlands Bowl, the location of the Grand Festival.

During the Sneak Peek event for this Splatfest, all three hub areas were decorated with posters promoting the Grand Festival, banners with portraits of each idol color-coded to match their respective team, tall structures with larger versions of the posters (these structures replace the floats in Splatsville), and gradient ink splotches in the colors of the three teams. An instrumental version of Three Wishes played at the entrance to the Battle Lobby in Splatsville.

A special news article in the Nintendo Switch News app, when used to open Splatoon 3, rewards players with banners themed after each of the three teams, as well as gear themed after the idols' headpieces:

Performances

Costumes

During the first part of the event, the idols wore their usual costumes as they rotated between each one of the three stages, whilst rotating through a set schedule of five songs per group. During the second part, all idols performed "Three Wishes" together on the Giant Clam Stage whilst wearing new costumes, primarily white and chrome-colored, and (besides Big Man) paired with iridescent tentacle tips.

• Callie wore a white, short, sleeveless turtleneck onesie with two loops of small chrome plates surrounding her neck, a beige frilly skirt above and white opera gloves. She wore long spikes in the knot of her tentacles, and beige trekking ankle boots with gray laces and soles.
• Marie wore an onesie with a beige skirt on top that matches Callie's, but with long beige sleeves and an off-the-shoulder neckline with chrome plates surrounding it. She had an all-white crown similar to the test of an urchin in place of her usual hat, boots similar to Callie's, and a black ring on the middle finger of her left hand.
• Pearl wore a white peaked cap with silver studs around it and a metal Off the Hook logo at the center atop an oval black plate, a white crop top with a harness on top of a mesh T-shirt, white puffy shorts, and matching combat boots with three buckled beige strips on the sides.
• Marina wore a white plunge bikini top, a multi-tiered chrome necklace with round pendants hanging from a bronze choker, partially unbuttoned white pants with crossed laces on the bare sides, and tall white laced boots. Lacking her usual headphones, she wore multiple piercings in her ears, with a small, teal round one on the front and several purple spikes behind. Her fingertips had a gradient to white, matching Shiver and Frye's.
• Shiver wore a white crossed crop top, silver serpentine bracelets on both arms, and long chrome bell-bottoms; she also wore a dark, curved horn-shaped ornament on the right side of her head and a dull red Deep Cut logo tattoo on the right side of her midriff. Her eyebrows and tentacles were colored white, with the front one seeming to cover less of her left eye than usual.
• Frye wore a white long-sleeved bolero, a chrome strapless crop top, matching shorts with a thin strip circling each of her hips, and white laceless calf-length boots reminiscent of Order Boot Replicas. Her tentacles had a shorter side bang and are tied up in triangular buns, resembling imp horns, with a holographic X-shaped band; she also wore the same type of band on her left ear.
• Big Man wore white suspenders with large spikes and a black leather underside, white bandages around his tail, and a white flared headpiece reminiscent of a mohawk or a sailfish fin. He additionally had three tips of makeup under his left eye, and a tribal-style pattern on his fins.

Choreography

The idols performed choreography similar to that of the live concerts, with brand new choreography for Liquid Sunshine and Three Wishes, as these songs had never previously been performed during a live concert or Splatfest.

Setlist appearing on the Giant Clam Stage

At the start of a performance, the stage was smoke screened as the idols appeared on stage. Once the song started, the smoke disappeared instantly, except for Anarchy Rainbow, Till Depth Do Us Part, and Smeared Canvas, where less thick smoke lingered on stage while the song's intro played out, creating a silhouette of the idols. The same smoke appeared at the end of the song, where the idols left the stage, in which a short break began before the next song was played. On the Giant Clam Stage, the set list was shown during these breaks, highlighting the next songs on all three stages.

Bands

Each idol group had their own jellyfish band. With the exception of Marina's keytar and turntables, they were the only ones producing music live for the festival. The band appeared and disappeared off stage with the idols.

The band jellyfish included:

• A drummer, with brown curtained hair and a mustache.
• A bass guitarist, with long blonde hair and sunglasses
• An electric guitarist, with black hair.
• A keyboardist, with a brown mullet.

The band had different colors depending on the group they're playing for. The Squid Sisters had pink jellyfish, Off the Hook's band was blue, and Deep Cut had green jellyfish.

The band nodded and headbanged in beat with the song, and when the drummer played any cymbal or the bass drum, the drum kit was animated to show that it was hit. The bass drum also had the idol's logo on it, depending on which group the drummer played for.

Set list

Over the course of the Splatfest, the three idol groups performed many songs from their individual discographies live upon the various stages available on the festival grounds. The set list schedule was revealed on 26 August 2024.

The dance choreography performed during the first half of the Splatfest matches the dance choreography seen in certain live concerts.

All songs played live are extended versions, most based on existing real-life live concerts (for songs which had been performed live previously).

Battle music

During this Splatfest event, certain Splatoon and Splatoon 2 Splatfest battle songs were added to the pool of possible Splatfest Battle and Tricolor Battle songs. The newly-added songs added were Ink Me Up by the Squid Sisters as well as Muck Warfare and Acid Hues by Off the Hook.

Starting on 14 September 2024 at 00:00 UTC a new remix of Tidal Rush from Splatoon 2 called Blushing Tide, Shark Bytes from the Octo Expansion, and Smeared Canvas from Return of the Mammalians were added to the pool of possible battle songs.

One of three versions of Now or Never! played in a given match's final minute remaining depending on which song played throughout the battle: if the song featured the Squid Sisters or Off the Hook, then that equivalent idol group's version of Now of Never! played. If neither of those two groups were featured in the battle song, then Deep Cut's version was played.

Starting on 15 September 2024 at 00:00 UTC a new song called Rainbow Color Inkantation by the Now or Never Seven replaced all battle music for Tricolor Battles. During the final minute of Tricolor Battle matches, the song changed to a version featuring vocals by either the Squid Sisters, Off the Hook or Deep Cut, depending on which team secured the second Ultra Signal. If no team secured the second Ultra Signal, the song proceeded without vocals.

Rainbow Color Inkantation was also added to the regular Splatfest Battle song pool; in the final minute of battle, one of the existing covers of Now or Never! from one of the idol groups was chosen at random.

Alternate victory and defeat themes played upon a match's conclusion depending on which team won the match. If Team Past won the match, a remix of Battle Victory played; if Team Present won, a remix of Fest Zest played; if Team Future won, a remix of Ego Overboard played. If the player lost a friendly fire match against other members of the same team, then the defeat music was either a remix of Splatoon's Battle Defeat for Team Past matches, a remix of Splatoon 2's Party's Over for Team Present matches, or Still Swimmin' for Team Future matches.

Tricolor Turf War schedules

Unlike the other Splatfests in Splatoon 3, the Tricolor Turf War mode was available during the entire Grand Festival. For the first 48 hours, the stages for Tricolor Turf War were those that appeared in previous Splatfests. For the final 24 hours, the Tricolor Turf War stage was the Grand Splatlands Bowl only. The Tricolor stage schedule was revealed on 30 August 2024.

• This Splatfest was announced during the five-year anniversary of Splatoon 2's Final Fest, Chaos vs. Order.
• Across all three Splatoon games, this is the first Splatfest to ever be held outside of Inkopolis or Splatsville, being held in the Crater instead.
• This is the first Splatfest in Splatoon 3 to be held for 72 hours, rather than the usual 48.
• The first and third options of this Splatfest use the same English names as the options in Past vs. Future, a North American Splatfest in Splatoon (albeit with a different question). However, the names are different in French and Spanish, as Past vs. Future was known as "Dinosaurs vs. Robots" in these languages.
• This is the fourth Splatfest in Splatoon 3 to feature plain-colored Splatfest Tees instead of tie-dye ones, with the others being Grass vs. Fire vs. Water, Power vs. Wisdom vs. Courage, and Lightly Salted vs. Consommé vs. Salted Seaweed.
