Template:InfoboxCharacter Sanitized Octarians are a variation of Octarians that have been sterilized or disinfected.[1] They resemble ordinary Octarians but with different coloration.

These Octarians have been sterilized with a type of "primordial ooze" created out of "supreme DNA" by Commander Tartar.[2] Subjects that are candidates of aiding this DNA's development are tested through the Kamabo Co. underground research facilities. The conclusion of the tests results in them being tricked into being blended as part of the DNA extraction method. The process of sanitizing Octarians with this DNA results in them losing all memory and sense of free will, allowing them to be controlled similar to robots as seen with the dialogue from Sanitized Octolings. Marina notes that the Sanitized Octarians appear to have no pulse or signs of life.

During the Turf War, Commander Tartar itself is revealed to be coated in an amount of the sanitizing ooze, wherein it has a sanitized Octarian tentacle. The NILS statue's cannon is also armed with sanitizing ooze.

Appearance

Sanitized Octarians are visually distinct from normal Octarians by their coloration: a blue-to-neon yellow gradient on their tentacles and eyes with black sclera and glowing aqua blue irises. Elite versions (such as Sanitized Elite Octolings, Sanitized Deluxe Octocopters, and Sanitized Deluxe Twintacle Octotroopers) have a darker blue and the same yellow in the gradient.

Their voices sound more digital and compressed and, when splatted, they briefly leave glowing blue pixels and glitch-like squares. Instead of the glitter-like effect that ink has in Octo Canyon, the Sanitized Octarians' ink resembles dishwasher detergent or hand sanitizer.

Sanitized Octarians were first seen in the Octo Expansion. The sanitization is implied to cause the affected to lose their free will.[3]

Types of Sanitized Octarians

The following Octarian types have Sanitized variations. Types denoted with an asterisk have only appeared as Sanitized:

Trivia

  • Agent 3 is the only known Inkling to have been (partially) sanitized. Unlike the sanitized Octarians, they reverted to normal after being splatted, though losing consciousness in the process.
  • Agent 8 being the 10,008th test subject suggests Tartar's sanitizing DNA sludge was extracted from 10,007 blended test subjects.
  • Although the implication is that Octarians lose all memory and free will after sanitization, biographies about Dedf1sh describe how "little of her former self remains", showing that, at least in some cases, Sanitized Octarians do retain some key memories.
    • This is further evidenced through the subtitle for the Drop the Bass Station: "Back like I never left", indicating that the Sanitized Octostomp remembers the previous battles against the New Squidbeak Splatoon and thus recognizes Cap'n Cuttlefish and sees Agent 8 as its enemy as Agent 8 is an ally of Cuttlefish.
    • The case with Dedf1sh could also be thought of as incomplete sanitization, as the ends of her tentacles are red instead of the usual sanitized green.
  • The Japanese name for the Belly Phase can be translated as the "Stomach Sanitization Site". In this level, Octarians are seen coming out of blue-green liquid containers with Octarians packed inside boxes. Concept art and commentary from HaikaraWalker reveals that the Octarians are Sanitized in an unseen facility, then packaged. They are transported to their respective test sites via the Belly Phase.[4]
  • The sanitized Octolings slightly differ from the other sanitized Octarians: their eyes do not have black sclera and glowing aqua blue irises when their glasses are removed. This could be an oversight as they are never meant to be seen without their glasses in-game, but it is still visible to view in-game at the right angle.
  • Octarians may be sanitized via IV infusions or drips, as suggested by the IV poles present in Fake Plastic Station and the scattered IV bags found in the Intestinal Phase. The bags have a liquid inside of them that looks similar to Commander Tartar's "supreme DNA".
  • Octoballs briefly appear in sanitized form during the Escape phases despite their non-sanitized forms not making an appearance in Splatoon 2's Octo Canyon stages. They first appear in moving containers during the Belly Phase, where they can be seen playing Gameboys, then appear again during the Turf War final boss, where they are inside the NILS statue's cannon.
