Maritime Memory is a song performed by the Squid Sisters.
Description
Maritime Memory is a slow pop song, in fitting with the atmosphere of the credits sequence in which it plays. The song mostly acts as a much slower and calmer remix of City of Color, with Callie and Marie singing the same melody, albeit with a different backing and slightly different lyrics. The main verses and chorus of City of Color remain mostly the same, with the first verse, bridge and outro sampling Splattack! in its backing. Approximately halfway through the song, it changes to a slow electric cover of the Calamari Inkantation with an older man rapping over it, and he continues as the Squid Sisters sing along with him. Finally, the chorus of City of Color returns, changing up a key before the song ends. The song plays in the credits sequence of Octo Valley, and it can also be played in Squid Beatz if the player has completed Octo Valley. Using either the Callie or Marie amiibo also allows the player to watch the Squid Sisters perform the song in Inkopolis Plaza. In Splatoon 3, Maritime Memory can be played in the jukebox if the player has downloaded the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass.
According to the booklet contained in Splatune, the song can only be sung at the age of seventeen, the fragile period of time between a girl and a woman. The booklet also reveals that the rap portion of the song was performed by an old man who stumbled into the recording session, saying "though my clothes may be tattered, my heart is pure and my charming voice will never fade away." The staff hurried him out but realized that they liked his addition to the song and kept it. It is heavily implied that this old man is Cap'n Cuttlefish; in addition to the old man's description and voice matching Cap'n Cuttlefish, his quote is extremely similar to a self-written description of Cuttlefish from Live from Squid Research Lab,[1][2] and the Octotune booklet contains a report from Cuttlefish in which he mentions that he once rapped in a song for the Squid Sisters.
Lyrics
The booklet included with Splatoon Live in Makuhari -Shiokalive- gives the official lyrics for Maritime Memory. The lyrics are nonsensical; the Japanese hiragana simply gives the pronunciation.

Other versions
Maritime Memory (Live)
During live Squid Sisters concerts, an extended version of Maritime Memory is used. Although each performance is different due to the live bands, they retain the same strong structure. When the Calamari Inkantation section is due to play, it instead plays with no vocals or melody, and the second half of the main song's verse and chorus are repeated before continuing as normal. After this section, the outro is played before the final chorus, while the actual outro itself is extended slightly. Two recordings of this version from their first and second live concerts can be found in Splatoon Live in Makuhari -Shiokalive-.
Samples and interpolations
Shooting Starfish
- Main article: Shooting Starfish
The song Shooting Starfish by Turquoise October samples Maritime Memory, playing Callie's vocals in reverse.[3]
Inkopolis Square
While walking around in Inkopolis Square in Splatoon 2, a low-pitched cover of Maritime Memory can be heard in the background during certain times, with its slower pace seemingly differentiating it from City of Color.
Trivia
- Maritime Memory began a tradition of credits songs sampling other songs from their respective games by the artists that sing them. Maritime Memory samples Calamari Inkantation and City of Color, while Fresh Start (from Splatoon 2) samples both Bomb Rush Blush and Tide Goes Out, and Into the Light (from the Octo Expansion) samples Color Pulse.
Etymology
Maritime Memory is based on the Squid Sisters' memories and pasts, as it is a combination of a slower Calamari Inkantation and City of Color.
