Protagonists

Team Blue

File:Splatoon Manga Team Blue.jpeg
Team Blue

A group of low-level, supposedly idiotic Inklings who are the main protagonists of the manga. They use a blue ink color. This team consists of four members:

  • Goggles, a Rank C- male Inkling who wears the Pilot Goggles, Armor Jacket Replica and Hero Runner Replicas.[1] He takes on shooter weapons, having a Tentatek Splattershot set. He is the mascot of the manga.
    • Goggles is silly, immature, and quite naïve. It is even mentioned in issue 4 that Goggles mixes up toothpaste and wasabi. He tends to mostly ignore anyone else except for Bobble Hat, showing that she and Goggles have a special bond.
    • He often can be found pantsing other Inklings, mainly Rider, and often gets naked in public.
    • A topic about Goggles from the squid profiles in the manga reads: "He can't hear his alarm clock very well, so he always leaves his house tired and disorientated. He also has a bad sleeping posture." This might mean that Goggles cannot hear well, which is why he sometimes ignores people. Another topic states the lunch he brings to practice is usually pickled plums made by his grandmother.
    • He is shown to be the strongest member of the Blue team, being able to carry Helmet and Stripe from the Dark Green team.
    • In the first issue, he wore the Pilot Goggles, Zink Layered LS, and Purple Hi-Horses; and used the Splattershot.[1]
    • In one of the chapters, his Armor Jacket Replica rips, so he goes to the store to buy new clothes. One of the outfits included a Power Mask, Black LS and Red Sea Slugs, but he got caught stealing the Power Mask from another customer. Luckily he did not get arrested. He switched back to Pilot Goggles for the next three outfits:
    • His favorite food is Onigiri - Japanese rice balls.
    • In Chapters 8 and 9, he is assigned as Agent 3 and wears the default Agent 3 set, wielding the Hero Shot Replica, plus the Pilot Goggles for the secondary headgear.
    • In the Splatoon 2 manga, he wears the Eggplant Mountain Coat and drawstring cargo pants along with his Pilot Goggles and Hero Runner Replicas since his clothes burned up upon Super Jumping to his team from the top of Deca Tower and crashing into the Crust Bucket. He now uses the Splattershot.

  • Bobble Hat (Knit Cap-chan or Bobble-chan in Japanese), a Rank C female Inkling who wears the Bobble Hat, Green Zip Hoodie, and Purple Sea Slugs.[1] She takes on slosher weapons, wielding the Slosher.
    • Unlike most of her teammates, Bobble Hat seems to enjoy Goggles' actions. She and her big smile show her innocence and is pretty much always happy, even in in the face of danger.
    • Although she is always smiling, when beaten by Skull, her eyebrows are seen to be angry and annoyed.
    • In the first issue, she wore the Bobble Hat, Green Zip Hoodie, and Cream Hi-Tops; and used the Splat Roller.[1]
    • In the Splatoon 2 manga, she sports the "Haircut" hairstyle and wears the Gray Hoodie with her Bobble Hat and her usual Purple Sea Slugs. She still uses the Slosher.
    • In the escape portion of the Octo Expansion arc, she wields the Tri-Slosher.

  • Specs (Glasses-kun in Japanese), a Rank C+ male Inkling who wears the Retro Specs, Shirt & Tie, and Plum Casuals.[1] He mostly utilises brush weapons, wielding an Octobrush Nouveau set (and a few other brushes).
    • Specs is a nerdy Inkling who can be very anxious but tries to hide it as best as he can. He tries to come across as level-headed and tends to flaunt his knowledge a lot but becomes upset if no one is listening to him.
    • In the first issue, he wore the Retro Specs, Vintage Check Shirt, and White Kicks; and used the Inkbrush.[1]
    • In the Splatoon 2 manga, he wears his Retro Specs along with the Baby-Jelly Shirt & Tie and Smoky Wingtips. He still uses the Octobrush, but he still has a few other brushes, like when he used the Inkbrush Nouveau set during the battle against Team Emperor.
    • In the escape portion of the Octo Expansion arc, he wields the Undercover Brella.
    • He is the actual leader of the Blue Team, despite Goggles being the main character of the manga.

Trivia

  • Most squids are named by a piece of their gear, mostly headgear. The honorific '-kun' or '-chan' at the end of their names are added in Japanese.
    • Some of these squids, like Rider, are named after their clothing and other squids, like Cleats, are named after their shoes.
  • As shown in a CoroCoro video about Splatoon Volume 1, the author, Sankichi Hinodeya drew the mascot, Goggles, in squid ink.
  • All teams in the first Splatoon era of the manga consist of two male Inklings and two female Inklings, with the captain always being male, and the bios for each team, except Dark Green Team, list them in the order 'male, male, female, female'.
  • The Inklings' and Octolings' eye color are based on their current ink color, such as Gloves having green eyes when he has green ink, while he is seen with blue eyes during the Salmon Run session, where he had blue ink.
  • Some Inklings are not named after what they are wearing, such as Prinz and Emperor.
