Nasty Majesty is a song performed by Off the Hook.
Description
Nasty Majesty pushes away from the vibrant pop and electronic elements of regular Off the Hook songs, instead more in line with the harsh and aggressive sounds of industrial music. The song starts with chanting, with Marina singing, before being joined by Pearl, whose quickfire raps overlay with Marina's vocals. The song is abundant in chants. It is only heard in the Octo Expansion, and plays during the second, third, and fourth phases of the escape sequence, being the first song that plays after the ambience of the first phase. After hearing the song for the first time, it can be played in Squid Beatz 2, with a maximum score of 179 and 316 in Normal and Hard modes, respectively.
In Splatoon 3, the song can be heard in the jukebox as of Version 7.0.0 if the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass has been downloaded.
Lyrics
From the booklet included with Octotune. They are all nonsensical; the Japanese hiragana and katakana simply give the pronunciation. According to Famitsu interview,[1] the former is used to indicate Pearl's lyrics in Inkling language, whereas the latter is used to indicate Marina's lyrics in Octoling language. In addition, Marina is the one singing "na na na" throughout the song.[2]

Other versions
Nasty Majesty (Octo Expansion trailer)
The song was first heard during the reveal trailer for the Octo Expansion. It is mostly identical to the version in-game, but due to it not having to be looped continuously, it has a proper ending, with Marina hitting a high note without any instrumentation. It also contains slight additional sound to help make the transition to the outro more dramatic, as well as a sound effect of a buzzing light to coincide with the Octo Expansion logo and a similar new intro, featuring sound effects of radio static and a lamp being turned on.
Nasty Majesty (Live)
Before the Octo Expansion came out, the song was performed at the Chokaigi 2018 Off the Hook concert on 28 April 2018. Being performed by a live band, it has a slightly different instrumental and a new instrumental break. During one section, Off the Hook performs part of the song with the instrumental cut off, and a second time with a minimal drum beat. It also includes the Octotune-style outro.
Nasty Majesty (Octotune)
Very similar to the version used in the reveal trailer, with a proper ending, the version in Octotune also contains an additional riff at the end that is not present during the trailer. It also removes the light buzzing effect, radio static intro, and additional outro sound, making the transition to the outro more sudden. Unlike the trailer version, it loops two additional times, bringing the run time to nearly six minutes, unlike the over two-minute long trailer.
Samples and interpolations
The Plan
- Main article: The Plan
The song that plays before the final boss battle in Octo Expansion, when Marina comes up with a plan to defeat the NILS Statue, samples the vocals of Nasty Majesty.
Trivia
- According to composer Ryo Nagamatsu, Nasty Majesty was the hardest song to write if to write if he were to pick one. He explains that his initial direction was to write a song with a "badass feel" (ワルい感) that seems like it would have a YouTube music video with hundreds of millions of views, but found it difficult to achieve since nothing trending on YouTube at the time had both aspects.[3]
- Due to its use in the first trailer, Nasty Majesty could be seen as the theme song of the Octo Expansion. Its prominent place in the tracklisting of Octotune could be further proof, as it is the second song after the Introduction.
- In the interview contained in Octotune, when asked what her favorite lyrics are, Pearl says it is probably "Wawawawa Wannochai" from Nasty Majesty.
