The Torpedo is a sub weapon in Splatoon 2.

Appearance

The Torpedo is a clear plastic ink canister with a resealable nozzle. When activated by flying near an enemy, it stops in midair and begins expanding into a fish shape while targetting the enemy. After fully expanding it will slowly launch forward, ultimately exploding when touching the enemy or a wall or floor.

The expanded Torpedo is designed after single-use soy sauce packets shaped like fish, popularized by Kikkoman. The weapon's front is shaped like the resealable nozzle of these packets, and its body has fish scales, fins, and eyes. The bottom of the pre-expansion projectile has a black circle which transforms into a propeller when the weapon activates.

The Torpedo was first teased in 31 October 2018 by official Nintendo social media. [1]. It was added to the game on 7 November 2018 as part of the 4.2.0 update.

It is a Bomb-type weapon which, when thrown near an enemy, changes shape and targets the foe, exploding on impact and splatting ink everywhere. Torpedoes thrown by opponents can be shot down with your attack.

The bomb is thrown and will target a nearby enemy, once it has targeted an enemy, it will change forms. After fully expanding it will slowly launch forward, ultimately exploding when touching the enemy or a wall or floor, after exploding it will spread droplets which will also do damage. A direct hit from the missile's explosion will deal 60 damage while the droplets will deal an additional 18 damage each. The droplets can hit up to two times, capping the damage at 96.

Uses

  • It is not possible to throw multiple Torpedo's at a time. A "Can't Use" prompt will appear, preventing you from using the sub while it is still active. Meaning there is minimal use for S2 Ability Ink Saver (Sub).png Ink Saver (Sub) outside of conserving your ink.
  • If the Torpedo is skimmed across the ground, thrown against a wall, or does not find a target, it will not activate its second stage and will explode much like a S2 Weapon Sub Splat Bomb.png Splat Bomb, only dealing the base explosion's damage and will not spread droplets.
  • When the bomb is thrown and no enemy is around, the ink left behind is smaller in radius than that of a Burst Bomb.
    • Inversely, when the second stage activates, the ink left behind after the explosion is about double the size of a Suction Bomb after the pellets land, discluding the random splatter that occurs.
  • The Torpedo is extremely fragile, any amount of damage dealt to it will destroy it. Destroying the Torpedo will cause it to explode.

Trivia

  • The Torpedo resembles the small, plastic, fish-shaped soy sauce containers often given out at sushi restaurants.
    • Additionally, the weapon bears a resemblance to the torpedoes launched by Drizzlers. Both can be shot down in mid-air, and both stop in mid-air and change in appearance before they unleash their attack.
  • After the initial explosion, the torpedo bursts into approximately 8 miniature exploding Paint-balls, based off real world paint-ball ammunition.
  • The Torpedo targets the enemies last position, much like Tenta Missiles. This gives the player arguably enough time to dodge, though players can already shoot it down.
    • Even if the sub misses the opponent after transforming, it will still cover a generous amount of turf once when it explodes, making it useful in modes like Splat Zones and Turf War.
