It has a simplistic colorful look, similar to real life childrens water guns. When utilized, it sprays a steady splattering of Ink until the player's Ink Tank is depleted. The weapon re-appears in Splatoon 2 and has a new design. It has a purple stripe design that wraps around the barrel, a dark blue/purple grip and a dark green muzzle. The barrel is now part of the gun body, instead of on top, and the muzzle now comes out of the barrel. There is a cap where the tube connecting the barrel to the gun used to be, reminiscent of the caps used to refill a water gun full of water in real life. It had Tenta Missiles as its special weapon in the Splatoon 2 Testfire demo, but in the final game it has Splashdown.

Trivia
- The Hero Shot, a modified version of the Splattershot, is the default weapon in Octo Valley and the Squid amiibo challenges, but it cannot be used anywhere else.
- The Splattershot was the first playable Main Weapon, available in the 2014 E3 Demo. At that time it was called the "Ink Shot."[1]
- Furthermore, it's Sub and Special were the Splat Bomb and Inkzooka respectively. No weapon in the Splattershot series has that sub/special combination, with the Tentatek Splattershot and Wasabi Splattershot using the Ink Shot's Special and Sub Weapons respectively.
- In Splatoon, the Splattershot has the most variants out of all main weapons, with a total of five.
- In Splatoon 2, the Splattershot's model from the first game can still be seen when using the original Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy amiibo.
