Ink Storm

The Ink Storm is a special weapon in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3. It is a thrown canister that summons a cloud that rains down ink within a large radius.

Appearance

When activated, the Ink Storm gives the user a large capsule that they hold above their head. Said capsule is cylindrical and has four metal fins sticking out of it with grips that change color to match the user's ink. The body of the capsule also changes color to match the user's ink, and there are four metal attachments sticking out the back. When the capsule hits something after being thrown, it breaks into pieces and releases a cloud up into the sky that changes color to match the user's ink. The cloud travels in the direction it was thrown while raining ink onto the ground below it. The area where the ink falls is indicated via a ring of the user's ink color.

After landing, the Ink Storm creates a rain cloud that gradually drifts forward above the map, raining down drops of ink that damage all opponents in the cloud's radius. An Ink Storm's cloud will not paint ground nor hurt enemies that are too far below it. It will also not hurt opponents above the cloud or underneath cover. After being thrown, the special gauge will drain, and the player must wait until the gauge is empty before they can charge their special again.

The cloud produced by Ink Storm can block a player's sight if they are level with or above the cloud.

It appears in four Octo Canyon missions:

The Ink Storm returns in Splatoon 3. The device now produces a single cloud that becomes transparent when players are level with or above it. It also increases the rate of recovering damage for the player's team, even while not submerged in ink.

It appears in four Return of the Mammalians missions:

Trivia

• The throwable capsule is based on a sea hare, a mollusk known for releasing clouds of ink when disturbed.
• In Splatoon 2, the weapons with the lowest special gauges for Ink Storm are the Custom Splattershot Jr. and Carbon Roller with 160p each, while the highest are the Ballpoint Splatling Nouveau and Custom Dualie Squelchers at 220p.
• Before the release of the Octobrush Nouveau in Splatoon 3, there were no brushes that had Ink Storm as their special.
• Ink Storm appears paired with every sub weapon except for Torpedo and Burst Bomb.
• In Splatoon 3:
  • Ink Storm and Tenta Missiles were absent from the Splatfest World Premiere.
  • The three weapons that had Ink Storm in the base game were three of the last four main weapons added to Splatoon 2, being the Bloblobber, Nautilus 47, and Explosher.
  • As of Chill Season 2023, Ink Storm and Kraken Royale are the only two specials whose roster does not include any bombs as sub weapons.
