Rollers are one of the three Main Weapon classifications in Splatoon. The roller has a wide range in painting capability, being able to cover large areas near the player. It is an ideal weapon for Inking on the go, and also has a short-ranged Ink-flinging attack.

List of Rollers
Rollers are one of the main weapon classes in the Ss.
*Splat Roller – The base roller in Splatoon. It allows for medium speed and wide turf coverage, with a small ink-flinging attack. Comes with Suction Bombs and the Killer Wail.

*Krak-On Splat Roller – Has the same stats as the Splat Roller but comes with Squid Beakons and the Kraken.
A Roller's primary methods of use are swings that create large concentrations of ink, and as their name suggests, rolling along the ground to spread a wide trail of ink and damage enemies on contact.
*Dynamo Roller A slower, more powerful roller. While its Ink-flinging attack is slower than that of the Splat Roller, along with a slower rolling speed, it makes up for these with wider turf coverage while rolling and a larger range for flinging Ink. Comes with Sprinklers and the Echolocator.

*Gold Dynamo Roller – Has the same stats as the Dynamo Roller but comes with Splat Bombs and the Inkstrike.
General mechanics
*Carbon Roller – A lightweight roller that acts as a middle ground between the fast Inkbrush and slower Splat Roller. Comes with Burst Bombs and the Inkzooka.

*Inkbrush – A much faster "roller." It moves exceptionally quick, but has a thinner coverage. Instead of flinging Ink, the Inkbrush swipes repeatedly, covering areas in horizontal stripes of Ink. It comes with Sprinklers and the Inkstrike.
When ZR is pressed, the user flings ink from their roller, painting a relatively wide area in front of them. If the user keeps holding down ZR, the user will hold the roller down, spreading ink on the floor as they run. Rolling into enemies with most rollers will instantly splat them.

Starting in S2, rollers are capable of executing a vertical swing attack by flinging after jumping (or after a small delay while otherwise airborne), creating a longer and narrower path of ink.

Brushes
Brush

Brushes are roller-like weapons that have weaker, more rapid swings and do not have a vertical swing attack. All brushes have a faster running speed when pushing them along the ground and leave behind a thinner trail of ink than any other roller. Prior to S3, they were classified as rollers.

*Splatting by rolling over enemies will change the splat cam message from "splatted" to "squished" (S) or "crushed" (S2 and S3).
*Ink flung from any roller will glow before it lands. This is often difficult to see, however, due to bright lighting in some areas and the small amount of time for which the ink is in the air.
*In Splatoon, the Carbon Roller Deco has a unique special weapon, the Seeker Bomb Rush.
**However, no main weapon in Splatoon 2 has a unique special weapon.
*In the corner of the test range are some parts of a roller, most likely a Splat Roller.
*Due to the large size of rollers, parts of them will sometimes go through walls as they are being pushed.
*Rollers are not affected by Run Speed Up when they are rolling.
**However, the effect is active while running, flicking, or doing both at once.
*According to Sheldon, rollers began as unofficial weapons but were eventually made official due to their popularity.

Revision as of 05:29, 19 March 2024

A promotional image for Splatoon 3 featuring an Octoling wielding the Splat Roller, a weapon in the Roller class.

Rollers are one of the main weapon classes in the Splatoon series.

A Roller's primary methods of use are swings that create large concentrations of ink, and as their name suggests, rolling along the ground to spread a wide trail of ink and damage enemies on contact.

General mechanics

When is pressed, the user flings ink from their roller, painting a relatively wide area in front of them. If the user keeps holding down , the user will hold the roller down, spreading ink on the floor as they run. Rolling into enemies with most rollers will instantly splat them.

Starting in Splatoon 2, rollers are capable of executing a vertical swing attack by flinging after jumping (or after a small delay while otherwise airborne), creating a longer and narrower path of ink.

Brushes

Main article: Brush

Brushes are roller-like weapons that have weaker, more rapid swings and do not have a vertical swing attack. All brushes have a faster running speed when pushing them along the ground and leave behind a thinner trail of ink than any other roller. Prior to Splatoon 3, they were classified as rollers.

List of rollers

Note: The series are arranged by their respective order in the weapon select screen with the Main filter.

  • Both Inklings and Octolings hold their weapon over their shoulder.

Victory:

  • Inkling Girl: Does a few stretches while holding her weapon before positioning it behind her back.
  • Inkling Boy: Does a "pop-off" while resting his weapon on his shoulder before striking a pose.
  • Octoling Girl: Raises her weapon off the ground to rest it on her shoulder before wiping her forehead and striking a pose.
  • Octoling Boy: Similar to the Octoling Girl's, but instead ends with pointing his thumb towards his chest.

Defeat:

  • Inklings: Holds their weapon on the ground while holding their head in disappointment, while pausing to shake their head.
  • Octoling Girl: Holds her hand up to her face, falls forward and shakes her head, before looking up while winking.

  • Octolings: Holds their roller out in front of them and bounces it twice, looks weapon over from behind, raises the weapon up and brings it down into a crouched position before returning to idle.

Splatoon 3

Spawner pose:

  • All styles: Rests their weapon on their shoulder while standing up straight.

Victory:

  • Flip Out: Jumps over the weapon and kicks it up, swapping hands to rest it over their shoulder while slightly crouched.
  • Reppin' Inkopolis: The user gleefully swings their weapon from side to side, hoists it over their right shoulder, and puts their hand on their hip.

In Ammo Knights (Clicking ):

  • Inklings: The player will look up at their weapon, put the roller on the ground and roll it back and fourth once, roll it to the right a couple more times, look down at their weapon and put their hand on their chin as if thinking before picking it back up.
  • Octolings: The player will look up at their weapon and flip it over twice, then slam it onto the ground and roll it back and fourth three times, then pick it up and smile.

Quotes

Squid Research Lab here, rolling out a report on rollers! These versatile weapons can lay down a wide path of ink on the ground or fling it forward for a more traditional attack. Warning: do NOT paint your apartment with one. (A "friend" lost their security deposit that way.)

Trivia

Glowing ink flung from a roller.
  • Splatting by rolling over enemies will change the splat cam message from "splatted" to "squished" (Splatoon) or "crushed" (Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3).
  • Ink flung from any roller will glow before it lands. This is often difficult to see, however, due to bright lighting in some areas and the small amount of time for which the ink is in the air.
  • In Splatoon, the Carbon Roller Deco has a unique special weapon, the Seeker Bomb Rush.
    • However, no main weapon in Splatoon 2 has a unique special weapon.
  • In the corner of the test range are some parts of a roller, most likely a Splat Roller.
  • Due to the large size of rollers, parts of them will sometimes go through walls as they are being pushed.
  • Rollers are not affected by Run Speed Up when they are rolling.
    • However, the effect is active while running, flicking, or doing both at once.
  • According to Sheldon, rollers began as unofficial weapons but were eventually made official due to their popularity.
